non-members ($64.00 members). From its very discovery by western-
bound settlers, Southern California has always been a destination, and rarely ever a place “on the way.” It ap- pears to have everything, or least enough of the good stuff to make it seem that way. The weather is always pretty decent

if not downright exceptional, the soil is great to grow almost anything, and if you’re in the right spot, “thar’s oil down there somewhere.” Yes, the state has some dandy earthquakes, but the sight of the Pacific Ocean and the feel of the mist as it’s swept inland by coastal breezes make it all worthwhile. Many feel the population has become too large to easily get around, and only now is Southern California once again experiencing the great public rail transportation it lost when the Pacific Electric expired. Railroad lines crisscross the area, importing and exporting almost every- thing and anything. Southern Califor- nia is ideally situated to be an active participant in the worldwide inter- modal system. One of the major rail- road players has always been Santa Fe, whether in the guise of its many sub- sidiaries and consolidations, and now of course, as part of BNSF. Signor’s book begins, appropriately,
at the beginning, with chapters cover- ing the era between 1879 through 1900, followed by 1900-1929, 1930- 1945, the post WWII days until 1971, and finally 1971-1995. It is a complex story but the author
does not fail. Having penned more than a dozen previous books, Signor knows how to do his research to weave a straightforward and interesting thread
