for its detail. All wheels pick up cur- rent and are blackened to enhance re- alism. The centrally located motor drives through dual flywheels to the gear towers. The model weighs 15 ounces and pulls strongly and smooth- ly without hesitation over turnouts. For the C-430’s DCC and sound sys-
tem Bowser turned to ESU-Loksound. This was indeed a wise choice. Lok- sound decoders are renowned for their slow speed performance and the C-430 creeps along beautifully. The sound reproduction is simply su-
perb. Loksound’s version of the 16- cylinder Alco 251 diesel prime mover sound for the C-430/C-630/C-636 is in- credibly realistic. The reviewer has chased and photographed such units across the entire North American con- tinent and the Loksound rendition of these units is perfect. It begins with the unique siren-like howl of the units’ air starters, settles into a crisp idle and then loads just like the prototypes. The effect is stunning and enough to make the hair stand up on the neck of any dedicated Alcophile. The horn and bell sounds are excellent and selectable, as well.
The lighting effects with the Lok-
sound decoder are first class. The head- lights have a slight delay as they reach full brightness and when turned off they die out ever so gradually, just as on a real locomotive. The front and rear number boards turn on together and stay on together. Many other brands of decoder have the number boards illu- minate directionally which is not pro- totypical. The lighting effects are sub- tle but add to the Bowser model’s realism considerably. All models come equipped with met-
al knuckle couplers with long shanks. The longer shanks prevent the locomo- tives’ pilots from interfering with the trip pins on the freight cars coupled to them. Such interference might cause derailment and this is prevented.
Bowser’s C-430 models are truly ex-
citing models. State-of-the-art details, high quality mold work and a brilliant choice of sound decoder combine to cre- ate a great product. To protect all of the model’s small parts, Bowser has screwed the models to a plastic base for shipment, surrounded them with a two-part, clear plastic, clamshell hous- ing, enclosed the housing in a sleeve and put the sleeve in a box with foam rubber. Neither of the two samples ex- amined showed even the slightest trace of paint scheme scuffing nor dis- lodged detail parts. The retail price for the Bowser C-430
is $199.95 for the d.c. model and $299.95 for the sound/DCC version. Many of paint schemes are already sold out at the manufacturer but are available from stock retailers. A second run of the models was announced in April for delivery at year’s end. Don’t miss out.–KEN GOSLETT

This tac- tical genius realized that to maintain an army in the field it had to be sup- plied with not only munitions but also food, clothing and the myriad of other supplies to be effective. With war clouds gathering over Europe during the late 1930s and 1940s, the United States Army Corp of Engineers began developing a group of railway locomo- tives and rolling stock designed to pro- vide logistical support to an expedi- tionary field army and the United States’ foreign allies. Captain Howard G. Hill (later Colonel), while assigned to the Army Corp. of Engineers, was called on to de- sign several modern locomotives as well as eight types of standard rolling stock.
