Then glue the two purlines into the grooves cut into the roof. You’ll want to add diaphragms to

the end doors at this time, then ap- ply the large below-the-windows fluting. It is not cut to length, so place it on the model and cut it to fit just behind the marks for the handrails by the vestibule door and just shy of the end of the car. This style car didn’t have fine fluting above the windows; just on the skirts and roof, but it did have a sin- gle flute just above the windows. Cut it to size and glue in place. The last pieces to glue down be-

fore painting are the number boards. Measure the length using the car number decals; leaving enough room for the four numbers and space on either side. Now we are ready to paint the car.

TOP: A Dremel motor tool was used to remove the window section from the base model, tak- ing care to smooth any rough edges inside and out. ABOVE: A bead of superglue has been applied down the middle of the car roof, and the wrapper has been applied, meeting up with center marks measured earlier.

from the sides of the base. Make sure the cut areas are smooth both inside and outside of the car. Cut out the door above the coupler on the vestibule end of the car. Measuring from the center of the wrapper at both ends , make a light pencil mark. Do the same with the base car at both ends close to the edge of the roof. Clean off the back of the wrapper with some isopropyl alcohol on a rag and make sure the base car is free of dirt and debris. Run a bead of super glue gel down the center of the roof, then line up the center marks and glue the center of the wrapper to the base, pressing down to make sure the glue is even- ly distributed. Continue the process

gradually down both sides of the roof and above the windows. When you get to the area below the win- dows, install the floor as a brace.

We used Alclad II Chrome paint. The chrome paint requires a base coat of gloss black or dark gray, de- pending on how bright you want the final finish to look. After the car has completely dried overnight, in- stall the window glazing (after re- moving the protective covering from both sides) with small drops of glue on the window pillars. That completes the basic construction of the car. To complete the car, add trucks, couplers, grab irons, and roof vents, which are available from a number of suppliers.

ABOVE: The completed wrapper applied to both sides of the car. To complete this stage of construction, apply the line of fluting above the window band as well as the number board. BELOW: The body was painted with Alclad II Chrome paint, with gloss gray used as primer for a brighter finish. To finish the conversion, install windows, trucks, couplers, and details.
