At the end of the month, the doors open on a new Digital Motion Picture Centre in Europe at Pinewood Studios. The DMPC is designed as a centre for training and knowledge- sharing on Sony’s latest cameras, combined with workflows from industry partners who are setting new standards in cinematography. Equipment for end-to-end 4K workflows and a selection of

both 4K and HD displays for viewing pictures in professional and home environments will be key features.

Cinematographers, film crews,

rental and post production facilities and freelance operators in the wider production community are invited to get hands-on experience of kit, through a programme of scheduled courses or by dropping in for a chat. “There is a growing

realisation that the performance offered by new cameras such as the F65 and F55 have opened up completely new

Turning a spotlight on lasers Conference Today

Laser technology promises to deliver bright pictures to cinema screens, boosting the quality of 3D presentations in particular. There are some in the

industry who believe that the public would pay a premium for a 'Laser' branded theatrical experience. But regulatory hurdles remain, as do some technical difficultites with creating cost-efficient green laser lights.

Today's special presentation

from Peter Lude, Chairman of the Laser Illumination Projection Association (LIPA), will shed light on the next generation of projection in a special session organised by the European Digital Cinema

Forum (EDCF) 10:00 – 13:00, Room E102.

Discussions will also centre on the status of standards for high-frame-rate movies and data-rate for HFR and the issues for archives in a world of disappearing film.

Pining for 4K: The DMPC at Pinewood will showcase Sony’s 4K expertise

with the aim of making it easier for filmmakers and production crews to gain access to the technology, specialist

knowledge and experience that has been gained over many years.”

Added Darren Woolfson,

group director of technology, Pinewood Studios, “We are very happy that Sony has chosen Pinewood Studios as the location of this new European facility to help filmmakers get the most from the new technologies that continue to evolve.” 12.A10
