It was this model that was put through its paces on a lengthy test drive incorporating winding country lanes, busy town centres and fast motorways and it performed exquisitely. Comfort levels are incredible as you sink into the fine ivory white Nappa leather seats and find the perfect driving position with all dials, read-outs and controls perfectly placed for driver-usability. Being a hybrid model means the start-up is completely silent and this car can pull away and complete two to three miles in pure electric, emission-free driving. Tis is a somewhat eerie experience as a vehicle of the 7 Series’ proportions glides silently and effortlessly along the road. Of course, when more power is needed the petrol engine bursts into action and the performance is exceptional. Road-holding is flawless even at higher speeds on tighter bends and the cabin noise very low at all times. In fact, apart from alternative display data offering information such as the vehicle’s electric driving performance and the slightly smaller boot capacity due to housing the battery pack, this hybrid model performed identically to its diesel or petrol counterparts.

We were even treated to a chauffeur-driven ride covering approximately 20 miles and comfort levels in the back of the ActiveHybrid 7 are truly wonderful. All bumps and dips on the UK’s uneven roads were easily absorbed and it was an absolute pleasure to sit back and enjoy the on-board DVD entertainment. As one would expect the 7 Series is packed with a comprehensive list of first class safety specifications and a new innovation sees the introduction of a Glare-free High-Beam Assistant system which ensures optimum view at night without causing glare to other motorists. Te ActiveHybrid 7 is priced at £69,140 although the test model rolled in at just over £90.5k thanks to a whole host of optional extras. Te starting price for the 7 Series is £61,215. Although the UK is not a massive market for BMW hybrid technology, Brian Cox, Product Manager UK for BMW 7 Series, said: “We

Anyone who regularly drives shorter distances will really benefit from the zero emissions and zero consumption this vehicle can deliver. “It really is a customer choice depending on their driving needs and requirements.” And whether customers opt for hybrid or more traditional power, the 7 Series is guaranteed to put a smile on their face.
