Tere are also plans to expand their presence on the Chinese mainland. Roup says: ‘One of the distinctive features
acquisition of Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America, Bonhams now offers more sales than any of its rivals. In addition to two major salerooms in
London: New Bond Street and Knightsbridge; Bonhams also has a further three in the UK regions and Scotland. Sales are also held in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Carmel, New York and Connecticut in the USA; and Germany, France, Monaco, Hong Kong and Australia.
of Bonhams is the broad coverage it offers collectors. While our competitors have reduced the range of subjects they cover, Bonhams provides a service over 60 departments, from Old Master Painting and Fine Chinese art to coins and toys. We are now also the only house among the top three auctioneers with sale rooms in Scotland and so are able to sell Scottish art in the country of its origin. ‘For many people who work in the auction business the main appeal is the huge variety of objects that come through the sale rooms. Some of them are weird and wonderful and some very beautiful, but all of them are fascinating.’ As well as a worldwide network of offices
and regional representatives in 25 countries, the influence of technology has also helped to revolutionise the way collectors are able to
participate in auctions. ‘Te advent of online bidding allows potential
buyers to bid in real time wherever they are in the world,’ says Roup. ‘Tey can see and hear the auctioneer in exactly the same way as if they were in the auction room itself. Not only has this increased the numbers of people taking part in auctions, it has also attracted new bidders who like the convenience it offers.’ Concluding with his top tips for prospective
buyers, he says: ‘Te most important piece of advice to anyone buying at auction is to use your common sense. If you are intending to buy, make sure you visit the auction rooms in the preview days leading up to the sale and have a good look at the items you’re interested in. Ask if you can examine them up close – this is usually possible – and ask to see the condition report, which will give you more information than can be found in the sale catalogue. Tere is usually a specialist on hand to answer further questions. ‘On the day of the sale get there in plenty of time to register and get a feel for how quickly the sale is progressing. When it comes to bidding decide on your limit and stick to it.’
