...THE MAD HATTER’S Afternoon Tea


Journey through the wonderful world of the Mad Hatter as you sample a feast of aromatic teas and surreal sweets


experience awaited us. In collaboration with boutique Luna & Curious, the hotel had created the Mad Hatter’s afternoon tea, and we were dying to see the outcome. We were presented with two lovely vintage books and two napkins, which were wrapped in a riddle. On opening the books, we discovered our menus hidden between the pages. An abundance of savoury and sweet treats was on off er, including the tea, which had been renamed ‘Drink Me’ potion! When the stand of cakes, sandwiches and scones arrived, my partner and I exchanged looks of amusement as we scanned the whimsical wonders that lay before us. T e teas were presented at the table in little glass caddies and were accompanied by a magical music box containing a ballerina twirling above lumps of sugar. As we sweetened our teas, the tune of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ twinkled from the box. T e crockery, handmade especially for Sanderson in the UK, was wonderfully eccentric. Teapots adorned with the faces of Kings and Queens and plates featuring animals, carousels and clocks turned the table into a stage full of characters. T e three tier cake stand, fi lled with eye-

catching creations, defi nitely worked up our appetites. T e melting mango cheesecake, with


aking our seats at a lovely marble table in the Sanderson’s Garden Courtyard, my partner and I took turns at guessing what kind of


its coating of rainbow coloured white chocolate, was as delicious to taste as it was to look at. As my spoon cut through the smooth top of the cheesecake, orange mango sauce cascaded out. My partner picked up the tiny chocolate cup containing three teas jelly and foam and grinned like Lewis Carroll’s Cheshire cat as he bit into it. It had become clear that this was not just an afternoon tea, but a voyage of discovery and a labyrinth of surprises. T e strawberries and cream homemade marshmallow mushrooms were very cute (and very tasty too) and we enjoyed the savoury as well as the sweet, tucking into a selection of dainty sandwiches. My personal favourite was the cold smoked salmon and lemon butter on rye bread while my partner enjoyed the smoked Cumbrian ham and wholegrain mustard on sun dried tomato bread. To further spoil us, a lavish cake trolley


carrying fruit jellies made in traditional Victorian jelly moulds was rolled up. Another surprise! T e lush oasis of the Courtyard Garden provided the perfect setting for this wondrous afternoon tea extravaganza, with its fountains and fl owering trees. T e Mad Hatter’s Tea is £35 per person or £45 with a glass of Laurent-Perrier champagne. T ere is also a selection of cocktails available to accompany the scones, sandwiches and sweets. T is is an afternoon tea like no other and one that we highly recommend you take a tumble down the rabbit hole for!
