Best for relaxation: The Alpina Gstaad, Switzerland

Te newest kid on the block, Te Alpina Gstaad opened its doors to the skiing jet set in December and became the first newly built luxury hotel to open in the Swiss town in a century. So was it worth the wait? You bet. Offering 56 balconied rooms and suites, a 2,000 sq m spa and three restaurants, this is undoubtedly the new playground for the discerning traveller. As well as all the usual perks, such as wood-burning fires and floor-to-ceiling windows, guests can expect a Cuban cigar room, Japanese restaurant MEGU’s first Western European outpost and a

14-seater private cinema. Despite its sympathetic and traditional design – it has been constructed using local craftsmanship and centuries-old fir wood – this is everything that a modern, luxury hotel should be. Te pièce de résistance, the Six Senses Spa, even gives Asian traditions a Swiss Alpine twist with a serene mix of water features, outdoor pools and ice showers. Rates at Te Alpina Gstaad start from £561

(including buffet breakfast or via room service, a non-refundable daily credit of CHF 150 per person on consumptions in the restaurants Sommet, MEGU, Swiss Stübli, bar and room service). It also includes free entrance to the Six Senses Spa, WiFi and wired internet access, covered parking, shuttle service to and from Gstaad train station. All taxes and VAT are included. For more
