Surreal, Sophisticated Sanderson
Step into a fantasy world full of whimsical decor, hedonistic spa facilities and an afternoon tea that will make you feel like you’ve fallen straight down the rabbit hole
T
he element of surprise seems to play a big role at Sanderson London, from the aesthetic of its interior to the style and presentation of its
culinary off erings. Stepping into the fi fties building, one is struck by the contrasted but somehow complimentary styles of contemporary design and baroque. Designer and architect Philippe Starke is responsible for this unique blend, juxtaposing Salvador Dali’s red lips sofa against pieces of hand-carved African furniture and even an oversized Louis XV armoire. As we entered our Superior King Room, my
partner and I were struck by the contemporary design and the clean lines of sheer curtains that acted as interior walls. A frosted glass panel separated the bathroom with its sleek free standing oval bath. T e curtains were a unique touch and could be moved to conceal or reveal parts of the room as we desired, meaning that we could change the whole feel of the space with the simple movement of a curtain! T e room, which had a lovely view over the hotel’s courtyard, had plenty of mod cons, including a spacious work desk, fl at screen HD TV and iPod docking station.

waterfrontmagazines.co.uk After unpacking, we had a look around the
rest of the hotel and discovered the Agua Spa. T e cleanliness and ambience of the spa surroundings could be felt almost immediately and the attentive staff made me feel at ease. T e Agua Spa’s ethos revolves around the restorative powers of quiet repose and total indulgence of the mind, on the body and on the soul. Agua’s off erings include many of the treatments that one would expect from a luxury spa, like their botanical-infused facial by Jurlique, but Agua also off ers slightly diff erent experiences, such as their T ai Yoga Body Work treatment. It releases blockages in the body through the use of pressure on specifi c points, making it a perfect treatment in the New Year, after weeks of over indulgence! Or, if you need to burn off the Christmas Pud, there is always the hotel’s gym, which is adjacent to the spa and features state of the art exercise equipment and video technology. For an extra push, there are also personal trainers available on request. For a night time tipple, the Sanderson’s
Purple Bar provides the perfect atmosphere. Draped in violet silk opera curtains and Venetian mirrors, with a bar that looks like
it has been made from a gigantic meteorite! T e Purple Bar is a sumptuous, elegant and truly theatrical space, providing the best champagnes, tempting snacks, modern martinis and the ultimate cocktail list! Next to the bar, we discovered a secret recreational area, the Billiard Room, so we ended our evening with a game of pool. During the daytime, we would recommend a wander outside to the Sanderson’s Courtyard Garden. T ere is nothing better than sitting in a tranquil garden knowing that beyond the walls there is a bustling city. Somehow, it makes the courtyard feel like a secret space, available only to a select few. It is also here, in the Courtyard Garden, that the magical Mad Hatter’s Tea takes place. T e next morning, we accepted our invitation to this fantastical afternoon tea experience...
