Outrageous indeed!

When we invited Glenn Rogers to look back on his life we never imagined it would be such a fantastic read. SO much so we decided to publish in three parts. This is an excerpt of Part 2.

“…I don’t know what it is about

my family, but no one takes any time dying. One minute they’re there, next minute they’ve gone, no warning, no time to think about it.

On December 13th 1972 Mum and Nan had been shopping, I was waiting to be picked up for a show at York Hall, Hackney before going to Bristol for three nights. …. I had to wait until the following morning to make the call to see how my beloved Nan was doing. “She’s gone, boy”, Uncle Ivor’s deep, quiet voice came down the phone. “She didn’t suffer, just went to sleep. She’s with Grandad again”. I was 14 years old, I had no idea how to react, I just wanted it not to be true.

…. That night (Friday I think) was not good. I forgot words, cues, didn’t smile or laugh and John (John Chapman was Glenn’s then manager and mentor) made me very aware of it.

He was teaching me the only way he knew how that this is the life you want, this is the price you pay, no half measures, no playing at it, do it or get out of it and leave it to the people who are strong enough…. The final blow came early in

February when John Chapman died of a heart attack at Moorgate Tube station.

Suddenly, there was no more guiding light, no more wise words. (July 2010 – Page 26)

The last line

This is Laurent’s column every month and he uses it often as a way of engaging a debate, even if it means being a little controversial sometimes. “…Did you know that Amazon for example has close enough to 13 and half MILLION tracks available to download… Yet, we receive hundreds of dance scripts each month with song choices totally impossible to fi nd. So the big question here is…why? Seems to me that if you are going to spend a great deal of time writing a new dance, trying out steps, rewriting it, trying it out, rewriting it just one last time and fi nally releasing it, the logical step would be to ask oneself …. can dancers get the music easily?

This leads me to another thought. Dancers can also exercise their rights and perhaps overlook what is not available. …. Perhaps if we all get a little tougher in our choices, someone somewhere may just get the message….

How to’s

Linedancer every so often revisits “etiquette” and in 2010 Gary Lafferty gave us his views on the importance of being courteous on the dance fl oor.
