Winners all the way … “…After the various heats around the

country – at Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Walsall, Henfi eld, Chalfont St. Peter and Exeter – a total of 38 teams made the fi nals (of Linedancer’s 2000 Choreography Competition) and made their way to Southport….. The fi nal days surpassed our expectations. The winner, Stewart Gimson of Nottingham Outlaws (ably assisted by Jim Grice and Alison Wilson), was surprised and shocked to be placed fi rst by judges Rob Fowler, Chris Hodgson and Adrian Churm. However, I (Tim Matthews, then editor) thought this a very accessible dance and choice of music – You’re My Number One by S Club 7- was excellent. Julie Clarkson’s dance to Let’s Twist Again came second and Josie Pickles homage to Status Quo rocked her into third place… Stewart said: “I never expected to win – in fact, I didn’t think we’d make it into the Top Ten. I’d thought we’d done well to make it into the Finals!”…Stewart noted that Line dancing has changed a great deal since he fi rst became interested in it. Initially the music he danced to was country with the occasional pop music track. Nowadays as indicated by his choice of S Club 7…. things have changed. For one thing dances are learned and discarded much quicker: “They used to be around for months but that doesn’t happen much now.” (February 2001 – Page 37)

Sole Music

We launched the Linedancer shoe in 2001. A far cry from today, with the one style (Practice) available and a foreword from Betty explaining exactly why the shoe’s criteria is what any Line dancer has been waiting for. (June 2001 - Pages 50-51)

Cover 59 - April The cover shows a very happy Rob

Fowler with a fi rst … this was the fi rst time someone won three awards in one year. The cover was also a candid shot, which was not something our readers were used to.

Another newcomer Have you danced X Cuse Me? Thought

so! It was choreographed by Kickin’ Kate Sala, the Nottingham Line dance fanatic. She is becoming increasingly well known on the circuit … Kate Sala is one of those people who has to pack as much into their lives as possible. “At the moment I’m putting the fi nishing touches on a new business venture.”…. (the project was) ..Pizza Loco a pizza shop based in the student area of Leicester … named after Cha Cha Loco danced by Kate, Maggie and Lionel Blair on tour together …. So what next for Kate Sala? “Well, I could always be a painter and decorator,” she laughs. More artistic talents? “No, not really, I’ve just spent a month painting the shop in Leicester – I’ve got to be an expert now!” (October 2001 – Pages 20-21)
