A Sixth Birthday
Part of the fun of celebrating a birthday of any kind (including the magazine’s) is to involve the reader as much as possible.
In June, we printed an interview of Betty and also an interesting questionnaire designed to fi nd out more about Linedancer’s founder… Some of the questions were: A/ Egg, chips & Beans B/ Hot Tamales and Black Coffee C/ Tripe and Onions
A/ Police Offi cer B/ Jazz Singer C/ Nurse
A/ Steve, have you met your deadLine? B/ 5,6,7,8…
C/ Have you seen the picture of my new grandson? (June 2002 – Page 13)
NEW DANCES INCLUDE: SWINGTIME BILLY, WHENEVER, @ THE HOP, JADE (MY ANGEL)
Irresistible Jo
… Line dancing’s vivacious fi rst lady has captivated and inspired dancers for the past 22 years …. She (Jo) wanted to express her unequivocal thanks to all those who voted for her in this year’s Crystal Boot Awards. “I was so delighted with two!” she beamed. “I was talking with Peter Metelnick the other day and we were teasing each other. He said when he was at the ceremony he heard them start to announce Choreographer of the Year, “the lovely…”, and Peter said, “well, I knew it wasn’t me!”…
At Elle Jay’s Jo tap danced, west coasted, jitterbugged, disco danced and jived her way through a sparkling demo. “I’m just another person who loves dance just as much as you all do,” she told me (Linda Willis interviewer) modestly.
“It’s a sincere joy and honour for me to just keep doing it because I love dancing and I love to see other people enjoying it as well!” (July 2002 – Page 30)

From 2001 Rob Fowler’s hat trick, we have Maggie G with FIVE boots on the cover.
Maggie’s Magic Moment CRYSTAL BOOT AWARDS - EXCLUSIVE REPORT
The cover is also a very clean one with fewer images and fonts, we obviously did not want to cloud Maggie’s magic moment!
A blueprint of the performance is created in a chart format which pin-points exactly where each dancer should be at which time. It is vital the everyone knows and understands the role they play in delivering the vision and must know where to stand, when to move, where to move to and when to stand still.
Chart for the Dove
With only eleven counts of eight to reform, the lantern carriers (aka Line dancers) run forward to their precise spot and as the 800 take their places a beautiful shape of a dove is created. With perfect precisions they begin a series of 16-count routines that will bring the bird to life and ruffle, flap and fly. What the chart fails to show is the glare of the lights and the lashing rain that greeted the Line dancers on the night.

Moving Message
The final move is a powerful and moving message. The dove of peace dissolves and the dancers take up precise locations across the stadium and kneel in a form that spelt out ‘SEEK PEACE’. Once again no chart could ever show the overwhelming reaction of the crowd nor depict the emotion of the moment. Unforgettable!

Chart for the Body of Humanity
Amid the procession of icons and lantern carriers, slowly the body parts are carried into the stadium. As each element reaches its mark on the grid the different parts of the body flow together to create one united form.

The icons, each one representing a different faith or belief, move to the perimeter of the stadium. The lantern carriers move to their next marks and form flowers of light that encircle the icons.
Elastic carriers representing the life-force or energy from the body stretch out to greet each different icon. They weave patterns of shimmering light that embrace and respect each icon.
Hundreds of children carrying lanterns take their marks on the grid to form spokes of a giant wheel and the whole vision rotates.
Commonwealth Games
“…The XVII Commonwealth Games
fi nale was a defi ning moment for Line dancing. With perfect timing they (800 dancers in the City of Manchester Stadium in front of 38000 spectators and one billion TV viewers) went straight into their routine, a series of 16 count steps performed at different times in different directions made the dove (image created by the dancers) ruffl e fl ap and fl y. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
Dancers with in ear monitors could hear the cues from Doug (Doug Jack, Commonwealth Games choreographer and associate director) in the control box and would relay them but at this point the control box had collapsed in tears of joy…. The fi nal move was a really powerful and gripping message. Line dancers broke from their dove position, their dancing lights twinkling under the dark Mancunian skies as they regrouped in a giant spell out.
The words “Seek Peace” shimmered across the stadium and the crowd went wild….. (September 2002 – Page 41)
