Outrageous strap line (Elvis is back) but we wanted to use that gorgeous shot for the cover that would be sitting around in dancers homes around Christmas time. The cover would end up as a runner up as ‘Best Cover Specialist Magazine’ fi nalist in the Maggies awards (a national scheme for best magazine covers).

“…Nicola Lafferty, a talented young dancer recently went to South Africa and on her return, contacted Linedancer Magazine. Her story touched our hearts…I have been dancing since the age of two, … and I … know fi rst hand how this passion can change lives through individuals whose hearts are not only ruled by music and choreography but who selfl essly can work miracles for others. Last November, I was asked to go to South Africa to be Chief Adjudicator at the National Championships in Durban. There was an orphanage of black children competing and boy, were they amazing. At six am every morning, instructor Sharon, goes to teach the children Line dancing before they go to school. …. Before her, those children had never left their hometown (Johannesburg). When I was there, I saw a young group attending their very fi rst competition …. Their outfi ts were their own school uniforms and shoes with hand made waistcoats over the top. At your next social, why not encourage your dancers to give the odd thing or two, it will soon add up. ….. Please help and with you on board we can all make a World of Difference for the children of South Africa….”

(March 2009 – Page 35) And this we did as the mini campaign

was very successful and our readers gave those young dancers a treasure trove of costumes and shoes for their competitions.

On the beat

Linedancer magazine has always tried to include everybody who Line dances in its pages. In September that year, we met Gloria Hughes who had developed a unique way to get older dancers involved. “…It was in 1997 that we (her more mature dancers class) wanted to go to Line dance weekends. Because there weren’t so many to go to, I started organizing our own. Our fi rst one abroad after a couple at home was Ostend in Belgium. By coach! I knew I would have to integrate some exercises into the journey. We started Sitting Down Line Dancing.

The principle was simple. Everyone had to move to music with arms, legs and all the linked muscles INCLUDING a smile! This would be taught by using recorded instructions on tape (as if teaching a Line dance), building the movements in eight count sections and voice dubbing the music for the fi rst attempt….Two years ago, I was asked to introduce the idea as part of Healthy Living Project for Age Concern Montgomeryshire. This is a centre for the elderly where people attend, meet socially and enjoy regular exercise programs. Joan Evans Co-ordinator of the Centre says: “Line dancing sitting down is a good way for people who cannot stand to take part in exercise… Sitting Down Line Dancing is really popular because it reaches people who cannot always use their legs as much as they used to but who have been dancers and still dance in their hearts and in their heads…”

(September 2009 – Page 38) Welcome to a new world

“…Maggie Gallagher has kindly sent us a picture of her new baby boy. Gerard Pàdraig Gallagher was born on the 1st October 2008. This picture was taken by Dave Blake at Maggie’s recent event in Blackpool.

Congratulations to you and your family Maggie and thank you for sharing this picture with us. Is she going to ‘toe the Line’ here or will we see number three?…” (January 2009 – Grapevine)
