First Awards

“As we approached close of play last year, Linedancer Magazine asked readers three of the hardest questions of all. What was your favourite Line dance? Who was the choreographer you most admired? And which British country band made the best live accompaniment to a Line dance night out?…. ROB FOWLER

– CHOREOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR …Of all the talented choreographers you nominated, Rob stood out, we feel, because of his success in matching the standards and winning the recognition of America’s foremost dancers, Max Perry for on has added Cryin’ to his hefty catalogue….

BLACK COFFEE – LINE DANCE OF THE YEAR ….But it says something of the quality of her (Helen O’Malley) choreography that readers were prepared to vote it to top spot anyway. Publisher of Linedancer, Betty Drummond, says that the dance is just that little bit special because “it has a lot of cleverly written sequences and interesting touches. For a mild tempo dance to be so infectious is very unusual….”

THE DEAN BROTHERS

– BRITISH COUNTRY ARTISTS OF THE YEAR

…The Dean Brothers have done their utmost to promote Line dance, while taking British country music from the bar room to the big time.

The Deans were one of the fi rst UK acts to make a meaningful impression on CMT, paving the way for other talented bands like The Cheap Seats.

They’re pretty much everywhere in March so you’d better give them a call….. (Page 15 – March 1997)

Numbers going up

…. A stampede of thousands of Line dancers made their way to RAF Burtonwood, Warrington in April…. Whether or not this will be deemed a World record, Line dance 97 was a rip roaring success. Linedancer can announce that over 4.500 dancers took part in The Freeze which was fi lmed by the BBC Record Breakers for transmission in September. We will let you know the offi cial fi gures as soon as we have it….” (Page 32 – May 97)

country music around that we do not need this kind of funky music. (Sheila Rushforth)

…I worry because if lots of Line dances are done to lots of pop records it becomes a pop dance craze, and as everyone knows all pop dance crazes die. The odd novelty track is fi ne….Now it’s things like Electric Reel and what will be next, highland fl ings to “Donald where’s your troosers” perhaps? (Liam King) (Page 50 – November 1997)

Pop/Country debate starts …

“As a dancer I’m aware that a large percentage of dancers are not really country music fans (though they believe themselves to be)…In my opinion, the live country music scene in this fair land will never amount more than a hill of beans ….until audiences are prepared to “live and let live”… (Carol Bradshaw) In response to a recommendation we recently purchased two CD’s, one called Men In Black and another by Puff Daddy. I was horrifi ed when I heard these tracks, they can only be described as a noise….There is so much good

Cover 12 - May 1997

WOW! Was that cover over the top enough? We really could not have thrown any more at poor Scooter Lee that month could we? We have a busy background pic, Scooter on top of it, Steve in an inset and every possible coloured font to go with it!

Another example of how far we have come since then!
