December 2012

This 200th edition celebration is such a wonderful excuse for me to return to the inside cover of my beloved Linedancer Magazine and to my Dear Dancers column. This is such an important milestone for the magazine and I can’t help feeling a sense of pride.

When I look back over all those editions I see a long and happy memory lane full of fun, friendships and laughter. Oh, the tales I could tell you! Seriously though, it’s been a great pleasure to have shared your stories, photographs, news and views with other dancers around the world and to have played a part in bringing the dance community closer together for the past 17 years.

Producing Linedancer is an important part of my life and the team here are as passionate about it as I am. They do an amazing job and I am very proud of them. I remember when we started we had no idea where it would lead or the amazing journey we were on.

Each month we embark on a new journey to highlight the many lovely people who share this hobby. Our job is to introduce new and exciting talent and present you with your monthly fix and along the way we added some bells and whistles.

But we always found space to cover your amazing charity events where dancers raised magnificent sums of money all over the world month after month, year after year.

We have also been leaders in our time! For example, when we introduced our own range of dance footwear designed with Line dancers in mind we brought comfort and freedom as well as safety and style.

Perhaps one of our greatest achievements was introducing the Crystal Boot Awards (thanks to suggestions from Max Perry and Johnny Twostep) an event which has grown to be a major date in the dance calendar across the world.

A personal highlight has been the chance to introduce young dancers with promise and follow their careers as they have become gifted and talented performers, instructors and choreographers. One of the things that still makes my heart sing is to see the young, the once young and the not so young dancing side by side.

But nothing stays the same and we had to move with the times. As technology changed so did we. We built our website and set about creating a digital world of dance with everything a dancer could ever need available instantly. We host a sophisticated dance database where many thousands of scripts are available at your finger tips and we pioneered a voting system to rank dances by popularity. We even included an option to leave your dance reviews helping others decide what to teach or dance.

So 200 issues later, we’re still here and still loving what we do. But looking ahead to the next 200 I wonder what the future holds and ask myself.... will I still be dancing at 80? Hell yes!

Yours in line
