A gorgeous cover celebrating the joy of dance. Not Line but dance!

The magazine was being broadened thanks to an editor with a very strong affi liation to dance in general and some of its features and pictures celebrated dance in most of its forms.

Music laws

“… As a down loader you may not realise you are doing anything illegal. A good rule to apply is if you are getting something for free which you would ordinarily have to pay for, you are probably in the wrong. …. You should always be happy to pay for music –after all it belongs to someone else. The record companies don’t generally give music away, even over the Internet. You are actually a copyright thief if you download music without the authority of those who own the copyright….” (June 2005 – Page 18)

“… As the curtain came down on Strictly Dance Fever two out of the three couples which made it to the fi nal show usually dedicate their dance lives to Line dancing.

Earlier this year we were amazed when from 80,000 hopefuls fi ve Line dancers made it into the top 30 couples. Looking back over the series I (Pam Edelston, our then editor) loved James and Claire in the Charleston. They were cheeky, fun and so entertaining … Jodi and Danny have been portrays as the more elegant couple throughout the show. For these serious scousers one of their best weeks was when they danced the Milonga.

They sent shivers down my spine and the judges were so pleased with their performance they pulled out their 10’s….”

only available from the Internet. You may believe it is safe to go online and obtain the songs from the web’s fantastic selection of tunes – but be careful, you maybe committing a crime.

It has been reported 23 people were forced to pay compensation totalling £50,000 for sharing thousands of tracks illegally on the Internet. Those fi ned included a councillor, an IT director and the parents of children who had used peer-to-peer music sharing web sites. Peer- to-peer sites allow anyone to upload music making it accessible for anyone to download it without paying.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) is leading the battle against the proliferation of music sharing sites. The attack on individuals follows the globally published case in 2000 against Napster. The industry won the fi ght against Napster, when it targeted them as the main contributors to the problems regarding illegal downloads. Napster is where music on the Internet began. It was an Internet sensation started by two college students,

ou read in the press someone has been fi ned a large sum of money for illegally downloading music from the Internet and I bet you don’t picture your Line dancing friend. But this may have happened or could be about to happen. It is common for choreographers to release a new dance and the right piece of music to be

Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, letting people swap music for free online. Napster at its peak experienced 60 million users, hence the record companies experienced a decline in sales citing the Internet as the reason for the drop. Since 1999 sales of singles have reportedly slumped by more than 50 percent. More recently in the fi nal week of 2004 legally downloaded tracks outsold physical singles for the fi rst time. And now the pop charts include legally downloaded music.

Five of the major record labels EMI, AOL Time Warner, Sony, Universal and BMG Entertainment sued Napster, almost instantly putting to death free downloads. But downloading is back bigger than ever – you are safe to go online and download music providing you use a legal site, such as the new version of Napster or iTunes. The emergence of these sites has given people the option to pay to download music instead of using unlawful methods. The new music sites are useful places to go, giving you the option to download a single for less than a pound. You should feel confi dent using these sites and as a Line dancer they could be the answer to your prayers when struggling to afford expensive albums for a single dance track. By using the legal download sites on the Internet you can get tracks for a reasonable amount, which is not going to send you broke and doesn’t leave you resenting the costs when the dance comes and goes. You can use the music link on www.Linedancermagazine.com where you will fi nd almost 40 artists including Glenn Rogers, Scooter Lee and The Deans.

You can choose to use the illegal download sites but you should know the industry does not research information on the individuals it sues - it is completely random. In 2003, in New York, a 12 year old girl from a low income family was forced to pay almost $2,000 for downloading music illegally. Brianna LeHara thought what she was doing was legal after her mother paid a $29.99 service charge to use the Kazaa music sharing site. The youngster usually only listened to the tracks and recorded them for personal use, to her knowledge unless she was distributing the music and selling it for profi t she was not acting illegally. The Recording Industry of America didn’t see it that way when they went after 261 people in an attempt to scaremonger people into giving up downloading music unlawfully.

With the emergence of share music sites, such as Kazaa, Grokster and BearShare, which offer free access to music, you may be forgiven for believing copyright has become obsolete. It is virtually impossible to police sites which allow people to swap music and they are probably always going to exist. The chances of being caught are slim, if you think about how many people are doing it - it is

reported eight million people download in the UK and 92 percent of those do it illegally. The probability of you being the next person to be caught out is unlikely. However, it is vital you remember it is the individual in the wrong. It is argued the illegal sites are not doing anything against the law by providing the software to make music sharing possible. Although it is limited there is music in the public domain, either because the artists have given consent or it is 70 years after the death of the artist. This makes a lawful reason for these sites to exist because this music is available for sharing free of charge.

Each week as Line dancers we see more and more new dances on the circuit and the music gets even more obscure and hard to get hold of. Every dance is not dancable to a Dolly Parton track and choreographers don’t just use pop classics and chart music, which is available for a reasonable price in local shops and supermarkets. The music we use covers practically every style and genre. Therefore the Internet and it’s endless variety of tunes is a great place for Line dancers to get their desired music. However it is important to realise if you are guilty of going onto illegal sites your actions will result in much more than ‘a slap on the wrist’. People in the United States have faced prison sentences and fi nes over $4,000 for what seems like a harmless exercise. The stealing of music from these sites has been compared to shoplifting yet the consequences are much more severe.

As a down loader you may not realise you are doing anything illegal. A good rule to apply is if you are getting something for free which you would ordinarily have to pay for, you are probably in the wrong. When swapping songs online even though no money is changing hands it is considered you are engaging in ‘commercial’ copying. You should always be happy to pay for music – after all it belongs to someone else. The record companies don’t generally give music away, even over the Internet. You are actually a copyright thief if you download music without the authority of those who own the copyright.
