launched Rheomer 33, a rheology modifying polymer for personal cleansing solutions. Rheomer 33 is a polymer formulators


can use to create a wide range of different textures for shower gels, body and facial washes and shampoos. The new ingredient is a new hydrophobically-modified alkali-swellable emulsion (HASE) polymer designed to provide efficient thickening, shear-thinning rheology and good suspension properties in low-to-medium surfactant systems. Rhodia claims Rheomer 33 facilitates


the suspension of beads and particles while allowing the exhibition of ultra high clarity, high richness and good foaming properties in personal cleansing end applications. Due to these properties, formulators can create varied formulations such as crystal-clear shower gels with suspended capsules, pearlescent shampoos and body washes, moisturising shower creams with high oil content, facial scrubs with exfoliating beads and mild baby bath gels and shampoos. Sinerga introduced a new functional


surfactant called Undeoat. The product is a lipoaminoacid obtained from undecylenic acid and selected oat-derived amino acids. It is a mild surfactant which Sinerga says has excellent tolerability and compatibility. The result is reduced skin irritation as the skin barrier is protected. In addition, Undeoat has strong


antibacterial and antifungal properties and has been shown to reduce sebum and dandruff formation.


Awards The new Innovation Zone Best


Ingredient Award recognises the development of a novel active or functional ingredient which combines science and product features that demonstrate benefits to manufacturers and end-users when compared with existing ingredients. Eight finalists were announced before the show, with three winners being selected by a panel of industry experts and announced on 15 December 2011. The Gold award went to Lonza for ReGeniStem Red Rice, a sustainable anti-ageing active derived from Himalayan red rice cultivated in a bioreactor. It claimed the top spot for its high material efficiency, sustainability and

innovation. Silver prize went to Lipotec with Adifyline, a novel hexapeptide which allows consumers to achieve a younger looking appearance; and Bronze to Unipex with Capixyl, a unique active complex designed to prevent and stop the hair loss process and stimulate hair growth.


Educational programme This year’s show also introduced a series of 30-minute ingredient demonstrations from exhibitors including DSM Nutritional Products, Galaxy Surfactants, Indena and Merck, who presented their products in more detail. Mintel Beauty and Personal Care also organised daily demonstrations around ‘Air, Water, Earth – Beauty Innovation and the Elements’, where visitors could touch, feel and try the latest beauty products incorporating oxygen, carbon, water and other earthly elements as ingredients. The Educational Programme proved as


popular as ever this year, with both the Formulation Workshops and Marketing Trends Presentations drawing large crowds, with half the attendees coming from Thailand. Among the highlights was ‘Formulating with Fragrances’, which provided an insight into how companies can create and market desirable scents, a session which was extremely well attended. The session included a talk from Stephen Weller of the IFRA who discussed ‘Changes and Challenges at IFRA and the World of Fragrance Regulation’. Also as part of this session, perfumers from Seven provided an insight into the fragrance creation process, from writing a fragrance brief to evaluating the final product. A series of theoretical and practical


Innovation Seminars was another important feature at in-cosmetics Asia and also proved popular with Thai visitors, with one in four attendees coming from the


local region. The seminars delved into subjects such as: ‘Five Years Younger in 4 weeks – Is that Possible?’ from Barbara Obermayer, product manager Cosmetic Actives, Rahn AG and ‘New Options in Optimising Sun Care Product Performance’, delivered by Dennis Wong of Lubrizol Advanced Materials Asia Pacific. Attendance was strong, providing further evidence of the show’s growing appeal to international visitors.


Conclusion in-cosmetics Asia event director, Sarah Gibson concluded: “The terrible flooding in Thailand significantly affected business throughout the entire region and provided us with a unique challenge to overcome at the 2011 show. We would like to extend our gratitude to all exhibitors and visitors who contributed to the rescheduled event – without their commitment it would not have been possible to provide such a productive programme of events. We’re delighted that so many visitors concluded 2011 on a high by sharing with us the future of the personal care ingredients sector.” Overall, the show was an impressive


success, especially considering the circumstances in which it was held. Delivering a successful show took a great deal of skill and determination on the part of the organisers and the Thai people, and they should feel extremely proud of the results. The event revealed some exciting new products and the educational content offered a wide range of helpful advice and analysis.
