Ima Joseph from Jersey reveals how she lost three stone – and avoided surgery on her knees!

JULY 2010

Why were you overweight? It was a classic case of turning 40, and enjoying too many meals out! My metabolism isn’t what it used to be and the weight crept on gradually. In the past, a few weeks of sensible eating would get rid of the excess pounds, but that didn’t work anymore and before I knew it I was three stone overweight. Why did you decide to lose weight? Because my knees became very painful and my doctor told me I would need surgery. I thought I’d see whether losing weight would help first. What was your weight-loss plan? I was seeing a physio for my knee pain at the time, and she mentioned Curves* to me, a women-only gym with branches nationwide. A personal trainer puts you through your paces for about 30 minutes three times a week. It combines both strength and aerobic training – so a couple of minutes lifting weights and then a couple of minutes running or jumping. At £34 per month, it sounded good value. What about a typical day’s eating? I’d been on every diet under the sun and none of them had worked, so the idea of eating less and moving around more made a lot of sense to me. In addition to joining Curves, I bought a Diet Plate** online. They’re smaller than the average dinner plate and divided into portions for protein, carbs, veggies and so on. I followed the portions to the

letter but didn’t diet as such. How soon did you see things improve? Within the first month I’d lost half a stone. After that, the weight came off slowly but surely – around ½lb to 1lb a week. Within a year I’d lost three stone without ever feeling deprived or hitting a plateau. Any high points? Discovering that I’d dropped to a size 10 and could now fit into my daughter’s clothes! Any low points? None whatsoever. I lost weight at a sensible rate, never felt hungry and loved going to the gym. My eating and exercise plan slotted into my lifestyle. How do you feel right now? Fantastic! I’ve made some great friends at Curves, I can wear fashionable clothes and, best of all, I don’t need surgery on my knees. I feel like a new woman!

Don’t make any food off limits – depriving yourself will only make you more likely to cheat! Allow yourself a bit of chocolate and you won't need to eat a whole bar!
