Gordon Ramsay Cooks Searing Grill, £64.99

After fathoming the lengthy instruction manual, using this grill proved relatively straightforward. The digital control panel toggles between both time and temperature, and a grill chart details the correct setting for a host of foodstuffs. However, surplus fat does need a little encouragement to drain into the drip tray – the guide suggests using a plastic spatula, tongs or wooden spoon. The grill can be used in an open or closed position, with a ‘sear’ function to maintain the optimum grilling temperature for that indoor barbecue taste. We loved: The number of different settings allowing you to choose the right one for the job. Downside: Meat took longer to cook than the guide says and our sausages and lamb chops needed

some help and regular

turning to make sure they cooked evenly.

Tefal Jamie Oliver Health Grill, £79.99

Whether you’re looking for a delicious chargrilled flavour or want to reheat last night’s supper, Jamie has served up a gem with this kitchen must have – although it does come with a heftier price tag. Quick to heat up – a ready to cook light lets you know it’s reached the desired temperature – and with an adjustable thermostat, food cooked quickly and evenly. This is no ordinary grill – there’s a barbecue function, a grill setting and even a mini-oven utility. But best of all, the grill plates can be removed for cleaning and are dishwasher safe – a real bonus. We loved: The removable grill plates! Downside: The only criticism is that it didn’t seem to drain away as much fat as other models, so doesn’t quite live up to its name.

TOP TIPS FOR GREAT GRILLING

Ease of assembly 

Fat drainage 

Evenness of cooking 

Any special features 

Ease of cleaning 

We used meat with a high fat content (streaky bacon, lamb chops and sausages) to see if each health grill lived up to its name.

Not everything that drains away from food is fat. To prevent your meat from drying out, lightly oil the grill plates before cooking and

marinate food to preserve moisture.

Expense doesn’t always mean excellence. You don’t need to empty your purse to buy the best product on the market – there’s one to suit every budget.

We found that models with a floating hinge feature faired

best in the even cooking stakes, accommodating meat products of varying thickness.

If your grill doesn’t have removable plates, a cleaning aid will help. Try George Foreman Grill Sponges (£3.49 for a pack of three) as they’re grooved to fit between the grill plates.
