Marks and Spencer Perfection Face Palette, £9.50

First impressions: A sophisticated, slim palette containing flattering shades for eyes, lips and cheeks. Overall verdict: The eyeshadows were smooth and gave excellent coverage, the lip colours were vibrant and easy to apply and the two-tone blushers were very wearable. The eyeshadows had great staying power but we did find the lip colours needed reapplying regularly. Though brushes were too small and testers had to use their own, it remains a good value compact.

Coleen Signature Eyes in Chocolate Box, £9

First impressions: A stylishly-packaged quad of shimmery neutral and brown eyeshadow shades in a lightweight palette. Overall verdict: The dense colours were easy to apply with the double-ended foam-tipped applicator and blended beautifully. We loved how well the colours stay put throughout the day without fading, creasing or smudging. We also liked the way the four shades can be mixed and matched in a multitude of ways, making it great for both daytime and night-time looks. This palette really impressed us, and at such a bargain price we’ll be sure to try other products within the range too!

Clinique Limited Edition Gradient Powder Blusher in Black Honey, £24

First impressions: A modern, sturdy compact with an unusual graded dark berry colour. Though initially skeptical of such a dark shade, this graded hue suited a wide range of skin tones. Overall verdict: The colour glides on weightlessly and gives a natural flush that really lasts. The option of mixing the light and dark pigments to vary the look for day or night is a brilliant idea. Our testers enjoyed sweeping a brush across the entire palette and loved the results. The mirror is an ample size while the powder doesn’t go chalky when sweeping a brush over it. We just wish it came with a brush!
