The TV actress Caroline Quentin
It seems that the lovable actress, 50, has been around for years. She started off intending to be a dancer, but finally got her big break at the age of 32 playing Dorothy in Men Behaving Badly. She has been a late bloomer in all areas – her second husband, Sam Farmer, is 12 years younger than her and she didn’t begin her family until her late 30s. In her youth she wasn’t ambitious and even now doesn’t take her success for granted, “I’m 50, maybe it’s all over. In the current climate, if there’s work I feel lucky to have a sniff of it.”
And don’t forget… Dame
Jacqueline Wilson The children’s author has sold over 30 million
books worldwide, is a DBE and was the most borrowed author from British libraries for four years running. But Jacqueline didn’t find real success until the publication of her 1991 hit, The Story Of Tracey Beaker, when she was 46.
The politician
Ann Widdecombe She’s now a household name but Ann Widdecombe, 64, only became an MP when she was 40. She initially worked for products giant Unilever and as an administrator at the University of London during the 70s and early 80s. She didn’t enter politics until she was in her 30s when she became a local Conservative councillor in Surrey. She made up for lost time, swiftly rising through the ranks to Shadow Health Secretary. Despite her hardline political stance, in later life she’s attained ‘national treasure’ status via an appearance on Strictly Come Dancing. She retired from politics in 2010 and now writes novels. Ann’s a late starter in other areas too, saying at the age of 50, “If anyone says I am not a virgin, I will sue.”
Gloria Hunniford Although a stalwart of TV schedules for decades, Gloria didn’t
get her TV break till the mid-80s after standing in for Jimmy Young on Radio 2. She had a radio career, but was well into her 40s before she became well known in the UK, hosting shows including Songs of Praise, Open House and The Heaven And Earth Show.
Lisa
Kudrow The actress found global fame playing kooky Phoebe Buffay in
Friends, but unlike her fellow cast members she spent her 20s as a research scientist. She was 31 when she took on the role and when Friends ended in 2004, Lisa was one of the highest-paid TV stars of all time, receiving $1m per episode.
