WE NEED TO TALK

ABOUT KEVIN BY LIONEL SHRIVER (Serpent’s Tale, £7.99) With over 600,000 copies sold and winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2005, initially the book divided readers. As the film starring Tilda Swinton is released this month, now’s your chance to see what all the fuss was about. Eva is the mother of Kevin who is in jail after a school massacre. Written as a series of letters to her absent husband, Franklin, Eva struggles with the possibility that she was the cause of her son’s downfall.

There’s a lot of buzz about this new eight-part series on BBC1, with one insider describing it as “a huge drama”. It stars Ben Miller (Primeval) in another quasi-serious role as Detective Inspector Richard Poole, who is posted to the Caribbean island of Sainte Marie. For anyone else it would be paradise but Richard hates the sun, sea and sand. But he does get to work with local beauty Camille (Sara Martins) as he investigates the murder of a British policeman. They will be joined by Hugo Speer (The Full Monty), Lenora Critchlow (Being Human) and Matt Di Angelo (Hustle) among others. One half of comedy duo Armstrong and Miller, Ben also reprises his role as Bough in the film Johnny English Reborn.
