Lifesavers When

someone is having a heart attack, squeeze either of their arms hard for several minutes. This can protect up to a quarter of the heart from permanent damage and make the difference as to whether the person lives or dies. Scientists at Leicester University found restricting the flow of blood to an organ in this way stopped further damage from taking place.

CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D CUT SKIN CANCER RISKS

 Women who have had non- melanoma skin cancer are at higher risk of melanoma, which can prove lethal. A study from Stanford University School of Medicine found non-melanoma patients given 1,000mg calcium and 400IU vitamin D daily had 57 per cent fewer melanomas.

IBUPROFEN PROTECTS AGAINST PARKINSON’S

 Regular users of ibuprofen may be 40 per cent less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, according to a study of 135,000 people by the Harvard School of Public Health. But there is a downside – regular use carries an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and has also been linked to a small increase in risk of heart attack and stroke.

Completed your family?

Decided you don’t want any more children but don’t want sterilisation that involves general anaesthesia, scarring or days off work? Essure is a non-surgical option available on the NHS that’s been around for ten years. Soft, flexible inserts are placed into the Fallopian tubes in a simple ten-minute procedure. After three months other contraception can be abandoned.

NEW TREATMENT FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS

 Some 9,000 people in the UK have cystic fibrosis, which clogs internal organs with thick sticky mucus. Now researchers have developed a drug (VX-770) to treat the cause – the production of a protein that alters the salt/ water balance – improving lung function. It’s hoped the drug will be available by early 2012.
