TECH News DJ DOCTOR

Dear DJ Doctor I have been DJing for over 15 years and after a lot of thinking, have decided to go digital. I will be honest, I don’t have a clue what to get. I have heard Serato, Traktor and Ableton are good, but they all do things slightly differently. Ideally I want to still use my CDJs to mix the tracks, is this possible through any of the aforementioned products? Steve Haldane

Hey Steve. A popular question indeed! What needs to be indentifi ed is what style of digital DJing you will be exploring. This will ultimately lead the charge as to what system to go for. Traktor and Serato are very similar in that they are vinyl emulators. This means that they essentially replicate the format that many of us are used to playing on. Both of these digital DJing packages can be controlled from turntables, CDJ decks or if you have got the new Pioneer CDJ range, directly from the player, without the need for timecoded CDs or vinyl. Ableton takes a slightly different approach and comes in from a production angle. It is very versatile and is extremely powerful, but isn’t like traditional DJing. Now, if Ableton is the route you want to take but you’re interested in keeping that old school fl avour, Serato with the Bridge now has the ability to combine both of these software packages in one programme, essentially giving you the best of both worlds.

BPM 2010 threw up a lot of new and updated products to thrill DJs, and one such product was Vestax’s revamped VCI100 controller. The VCI100 MKII is a dedicated controller for Native Instruments Traktor. This updated version takes into account the four-deck mixing capabilities of Native’s popular DJing software. The VCI100 MKII controller has a better layout than its predecessor and also borrows the handy joystick found on the TR1 for navigation and loading tunes. One completely new feature is the built-in soundcard. As well as the revamped body work the VCI now has adjustable jog wheels. A great re-up, all in all. £369 Vestax.com
