NIGHT TIME PLAN We’re not going to tell you about the biggest clubs the island has to offer - turn to the back pages for that. Here’s our alternative evening guide…
At least one sunset at Cafe Mambo is vital. Head massages are available from the Mambo chicas, whilst you sip daiquiris. Applauding the sun as it slips beyond the horizon is obligatory. It’s also the perfect opportunity to catch Pete Tong broadcasting his Radio 1 show every Friday, or Bob Sinclar on Saturdays, as they are dedicated to Defected. If you want to get away from the busy sunset strip, try Kumharas at Cala de Bou. Get a taxi or take the boat from San An harbour for only 3€. A wicked alternative and excellent destination for a seductive date.
A few years ago, the local authorities laid down the law that there should be no outdoor music after midnight. Party poopers. But they lift this law twice a summer for the Cala Bassa and Portinax Beach Parties, so make the most of it! Free entry with cheap bars, but we recommend filling your rucksack full of cervezas. Full of workers and locals, skinny-dipping is popular, so pack a towel. A refreshing change.
Bored of losing your friends in super clubs? Try Underground. An opportunity to catch big names and upcoming stars, Maya Jane Coles played her first Ibiza dates here and Rhadoo, Simon Baker and Matthias Tanzmann have graced the decks... Drinks are cheap(er) and you don’t have to shell out on bottled
water, as the tap water is pure. Chicks get in free. Ya dig? Or try Aura. Scrub up a bit, as this is a civilised affair. Eat in the jungle-like restaurant and indulge in their cocktails. Each Tuesday, the Nightmares On Wax gents arrive with their live band, bringing some rare groove to the island. And if you are, like, so laidback that you are horizontal, try Benirras beach for hippy Sundays. Soundtracked by bongos and didgeridoos, just get mellow and look at the stars.
THE MORNING AFTER If there’s one way to avoid feeling rough around the edges, it’s watching the sunrise at Playa d’en Bossa. Walking distance from Space, it’s tough to feel jaded with all that vitamin D soaking your skin. Don’t forget sunscreen. Red faces are not, we repeat, not cool. Perfect with your gang or for an intimate, romantic treat. An early morning dip will swiftly remove any cobwebs.
Since the powers that be have clamped down on daytime parties, it’s been difficult to find a beat in the sunshine, but that’s changing. Ushuaia are bringing back the alfresco bump & grind, with line-ups from Jamie Jones, Dennis Ferrer, the Martinez Brothers and more. Pool-side parties, an epic stage and light show to boot, prepared to be wowed! There’s also a secret, smaller pool where they pump classical music beneath the water. But don’t attempt to use it without an invite, Ushuaia security are beefy and take no nonsense.
