THE EAGLE HAS LANDED

Clocking up airmiles at a rate of knots, with a gig diary fit to burst and a long-awaited album set to drop, Dirtybird Justin Martin brings his booty-shaking sub basslines to Ibiza…

20th anniversary party at Space, in order to induce some serious rump- associated dancing. His San Francisco label specialise in bass-heavy house and techno, all with a serious dose of funk, hip-hop and d&b influences. It’s a home-grown family affair, consisting of big poppa Claude Von Stroke at the head of the family, the Martin Brothers (not to be confused with the Martinez Brothers!) aka Justin and Christian, J.Phlip and Worthy. And boy, does this bird fly! In the last week, he’s covered San Fran > Detroit > Vegas > Detroit > San Fran > London > Ibiza. We hope he’s signed up for airmiles. And as you’d expect, the Dirtybird flock do flock together like birds of a feather, and host regular now-infamous parties in the Golden Gate Park of SF. Even more recently, they hosted one at Detroit’s Movement weekend, but this little birdie missed out, playing the festival itself, but not the Dirtybird event. “Detroit was insane, but I actually didn’t get to play the Dirtybird party because I had to play a gig in Vegas in-between, which ended up kinda being a bust because I played outside by the pool area and it was 55 degrees and windy! I wish I could have stayed in Detroit! The vibe is crazy! There’s the old school candy raver vibe, you feel like you’ve stepped back into a time warp or something, but there’s also the younger crew and so many heads and friends! For me there’s like 30 San Francisco peeps there and we all raid the same hotel and rent rooms next to each other. It’s just a party the whole weekend. And of course, don’t forget the music, it’s incredible! It definitely puts Miami WMC to shame.”

BUMP AND GRIND Although a fully enlisted fan of the island — with appearances scheduled throughout the summer at Space and Amnesia — Justin is still relatively new to the place. “I’ve been here once before, and that was five years ago, playing at El Divino. My first impressions were awesome! I ended up missing my flight and stayed for an extra four or five days... It was half on purpose and half.... well, actually, it was just pretty much on purpose. I was like, ‘You know what, this place is pretty great, I’m gonna stay a while’.” But this time he isn’t going to be missing that flight; the boy has too much going on back home. “I am working my ass off at the minute to finish my album. I’m determined to get it out by the fall... There’s no real deadline, which is kinda nice, so it’s just pressure I am putting on myself. I can just wait ‘til I’m happy with it. I’ve teamed up

ooty shaking tech house” — that was the response Justin gave us when we asked what to expect from his set tonight. This Dirtybird has just flown roughly 6058.02 miles from San Francisco to Ibiza to play the DJmag
