DEFECTED IN

THE HOTEL The don of Defected,

Simon Dunmore does it in daylight

DAYTIME parties are back with a vengeance thanks to Ushuaia. Offering some of the best poolside parties this summer, this is one beach hotel that takes its music bookings very seriously. With Defected In The House returning to Pacha for another year, ruling the roost in the Saturday night slot, it seems only logical that they take up residency at the hotel for their pre parties. “What Ushuaia have done is spectacular... the island needed something like this,” says label boss and DJ, Simon Dunmore, when we meet him at the hotel’s beach bar. “The party atmosphere was never in danger of dying out in Ibiza, but bringing back daytime parties is reviving the island’s original attitude. Defected is really happy to be part of it.” Their opening night at Pacha welcomed DJ Chus, David Penn and Copyright to the decks. “Coming up we have our in-house guilty pleasure, Bob Sinclar, also Frankie Knuckles, The Shapeshifters, Sandy Rivera, Dimitri from Paris, Junior Jack, Kid Crème, and of course our very own Sam Divine.” All the same DJs will be spinning at Ushuaia before hitting the club. As if he isn’t busy enough running these parties, Simon Dunmore has also mixed the triple CD mix comp ‘Defected Ibiza ‘11’. “The first CD is feel-good summer vibes for daytime parties. There’s a great Guti & Luca Bacchetti tune on there. Keep an eye out for Guti — big things coming up.”

The second CD is main room tracks. “It also reflects the people we have headlining our nights, like Frankie, Dimitri etc,” Simon says. And rounding it all up nicely is the after-party style of the final CD. “With my mixes I try to cover all the different moods of Ibiza.” Each and every party catered for. Nice one Simon!

OF MAN AND MACHINES

Mat Playford comes fully equipped to Space them!”

ALTHOUGH a resident for the last five years at Space’s regular Sunday love-ins (more commonly known as We Love...), it’s only now that Mat Playford is getting to show everybody what he’s really about. Manning the helm of the Terraza on the opening night of Space this season, he played an epic opening set to a rammed room. Once mentored by Sandy Rivera and a long-time collaborator with both Paul Woolford and Tim Deluxe, he’s best known for his house sets and production... but don’t expect a normal set this season. He’ll be returning on the 17th July, 14th August and 11th September, and this is one guest who certainly does not turn up empty handed. “I’ve got a DJR 400 mixer built into a wooden cabinet with a Moog Voyager, two iPads, a Mac mini, a big effects unit and some moogerfoogers,” Mat says. “It weighs in at about 65 kilos. I’d feel a bit bad turning up to a gig with a USB stick now. I like to make a proper effort.” Evidently a serious lover of synths, he’s just as fond of the experimentation of Jean-Michel Jarre as he is the disco sensibility of Giorgio Moroder: “I’d love to just get up there and play three hours of one-note on a synthesiser, tweaking the shit out of it! But the crowd on the Space Terrace have been working hard all year and this might be their one opportunity to let their hair down, so it’s my job to entertain

Building each track live on stage, Playford has another trick up his sleeve. “I’m gonna wire up my iPhone to the kit, call Sandy up, get him to say something to the crowd and mess with it live on the synths!”

It’s undoubtedly his insane levels of creativity that got Mat picked to launch the new ‘We Love... Artist Profiles’ compilations. Comprising of two discs, one is all original material and the other a mix of inspirations. His mix CD achieves a timeless quality due to his song selection spanning a number of years, but the real star of the show is the second disc, produced under the moniker of Weirdo Police with his pal Tom Gray. “I make house music, but Weirdo Police is all Balearic and downtempo. I was trying to get inside the sound of the institution that we work for...”

Hence naming one of the tracks Alfredo? “100%! I made that track and thought, ‘This tune just smells of Ibiza’. What’s something that’s synonymous with Ibiza? Alfredo! Just a tribute to the old boy.” Get your hands on the CD, and ogling over the DJ booth to get an eyeful of his amazing set-up is a must!
