as a replacement, the Jubilee Market off Winchester Walk, which has been open for two years.
The market is soon to expand into a new purpose-built market hall giving traders a ‘high street entrance’ for the fi rst time in centuries, Network Rail said.
The bridge works represented the fi nal part of this phase of the project, with fi nalising works carried out on May 7 and 8.
The bridge created “a new landmark” for the area, Jurkowski says. It was made off-site and transported to Borough High Street in three sections, before being assembled on top of the new viaduct then slid into place by Skanska and Network Rail engineers.
Jurkowski explained: “A project of this scale taking place in such a heavily built- up area required outstanding planning and innovation. Our solution was to build the new bridge on top of the new viaduct, which offered best value for money and
minimal disruption for passengers, road users and the community.
“With the new bridge becoming a signifi cant new local landmark we wanted to involve the community in its construction. We hosted hundreds of people over the weekend onboard a Routemaster bus which was positioned to provide a great view of the completion of this important milestone for the Thameslink Programme.”
Network Rail will also be building a new mixed-use development at 11-15 Borough High Street, replacing a building that had
to be demolished to make space for the new bridge.
By 2018, the extended viaduct will link into the redeveloped London Bridge station (see page 62).
But Network Rail said it wanted to get this part of those works out of the way early, because doing it all at once “would bring the area to a standstill”, adding: “Phasing the work helps up keep London Bridge accessible throughout the works.”
