wheel profi ling for London Underground with its Mobile Wheel Lathe type MOBI- TURN®
.
The company developed the principle of the mobile lathe in the late 1990s, and the fi rst production machine was delivered in 2002. MOBITURN®
is worldwide the fi rst
and only wheel set re-conditioning system that is transportable to the customer’s site. MOBITURN®
does not require a
permanent installation or pit. The MOBITURN®
machine is moved via
specialty road transport truck and trailer to various locations and the specialty truck is equipped with a crane to offl oad the machine from the trailer.
MOBITURN® is equipped with its own
progression drive and thus independently positions to the wheel sets to be machined on a vehicle while the vehicle is lifted upon
jacks. The machine has an integrated chip crusher and conveying system. An important feature of the MOBITURN® is its integrated power unit, which has its own cable reel and standard connection for plugging into the shop electrical system.
Four years ago Transport for London contracted Hegenscheidt-MFD to reprofi le its fl eet via utilising the services of Hegenscheidt’s MOBITURN® machines.

the machines and charges for each profi le turned under contract.
The concept of wheel profi le turning via MOBITURN®
has proven itself by enabling
rolling stock users the fl exibility of machine utilization when required.

ZF Services UK explain how they can accelerate rail drive overhaul turnaround times. Stand A41 H
igh quality, dependable rail drives are a vital requirement for rail opera-
tors if they are to avoid the severe fi nancial penalties imposed by rail regulators when a scheduled service is interrupted. While the design and build quality of the drive is a major factor, reliability is also heavily in- fl uenced by the quality of the maintenance that it receives throughout a working life of typically 30 years.
Specialist workshop and testing facilities, supported by mobile technical resources for fault diagnosis and on-site repairs ensure that ZF Services UK is ideally po- sitioned to provide comprehensive after- sales support service for rail drives. The company initially carries out a condition assessment to establish a true rather than theoretical timescale for overhaul, which in some cases enables the fi rst overhaul mile- age to be safely extended by up to 50%.

But it’s not only operators of ZF rail drives that can benefi t from this expertise – ZF Services UK is also the global Centre of Competence for non-ZF rail drive systems.
A number of train operators have already engaged the company to undertake overhaul work on other manufacturers’ rail drives. This is particularly benefi cial where UK after-sales support is not available from the original manufacturer of the rail drive, and units requiring overhaul are usually returned to repair centres elsewhere in Europe.
This may keep them out of service for two months or longer, but ZF Services UK can have them back into service within weeks, bringing the operator considerable cost and turnaround benefi ts without compro- mising quality.
