Austrian company Maschinenfabrik Liezen un Gießerei GmbH report back from a rail milling train trial conducted in the wilds of a Russian winter.

he fi rst performance demonstration of the new rail milling train RFP1


in Russia in April 2011 was a great success. This OAO Remputmash Kaluga rail milling train, using the latest MFL milling technology, was developed for the enormous requirements of the Russian railway network. Among the 30 special guests was the vice president of RZhD (Russian Railways) who was thoroughly convinced by the power and quality of this unique machine.


The impressive appearance and the excellent performance data speaks for itself: a total length of 66.5m, 3m width, 4.6m height, 300 tonnes total weight, a chip container with 30m3. The RFP 1 is equipped with four MFL rail milling aggregates, each with a diameter of 1400mm. Therefore a milling performance of 3mm at the driving surface and 8mm at the driving edge per milling aggregate is possible. By using two milling aggregates per side the milling depth can be doubled.


The machine has been designed for 24


hours’ continuous operation in the vastness of the Russian Federation. Therefore, one milling aggregate can always be recharged while the other one is working and this capacity is reached with the habitual quality of a mobile milling train of MFL.


The RFP1 offers the four-person crew a comfortable working environment. The machine is equipped with sleeping places, a living room, kitchen, bathroom and lavatory for longer working trips.


During the performance demonstration, the machine withstood the weather conditions as well. Initially the sun was shining but the weather changed rapidly into a Russian snowstorm. Even these bad conditions could not affect the performance of this milling train.


This machine set new performance standards in the rail milling technology concerning surface quality, material removal rates and stability time. For this reason the rail milling technology will increase its competitive edge economically.


The processing time grows and the tool change will be in the auxiliary process time.


The environment and effi ciency of the railway maintenance are a big concern of MFL. An effective and effi cient maintenance of the rail, whether preventive or for repair reasons, prevents the environment by noise reduction and leaving no pollution.


Due to the reduction of tool costs and auxiliary costs (purifi cation of the track, tunnel) compared for example to the grinding process, the milling process contributes essentially to the economic success of an organisation.


Future advancements will be unveiled shortly; waiting in the wings is the new fi nishing system of MFL, which creates unprecedented surface qualities.
