maining four central London stations (see side panel), which includes design develop- ment. How much scope will the contractors have to come up with their own design so- lutions?

Not an awful lot, says Robinson, because of the need for common design touches. He explained: “The common elements of design, for example the below-ground environment, are fairly well advanced. Essentially what we’re looking to do is work with the contractors to fi nalise the detail. I think that’s also probably the right way to describe what we’re looking at doing with the ticket halls, which are at a slightly less detailed level of design, with the common components.

“I’m not expecting any great changes, but we want to work with the contractors to ensure we are getting the right sort of con- structability, the right sort of value and no loss of design concept strength. I’m not ex-

pecting wholesale redesign by any stretch of the imagination.”

A key element of the design work has been seeing the Crossrail station vision ‘in the fl esh’, thanks to a mock-up platform at VINCI’s Technology Centre at Leighton Buzzard, where fi lm set design techniques were used to replicate Crossrail’s design vision. The mock-up, which is 20m long, 10m wide and has a 5m high ceiling above the platform-edge doors cost around £350,000.

It is not a new idea, Robinson acknowl- edged: “The mock-up is similar to those that have come in the past in respect of what it’s actually for. We had one with the Jubilee Line Extension, we had one with Crossrail the fi rst time round too: a full- scale mock-up of the platform area.

“So, I wouldn’t say we’re being innovative by doing one, but what we’re looking to do is
