ODU tells of the data connector the company has developed for fast and reliable data transmission in railrway technology that defi es the harsh environmental conditions.

n recent years, Deutsche Bahn has introduced new, ultra-mod- ern systems in many areas such as customer information, video sur- veillance and passenger counting in order to improve the service for the passengers. Ethernet is used for data transmission in order to cope with the increased number of communication tasks in the trains. This has correspondingly resulted in changes in the re- quirement profi le for the connec- tors and other electromechani- cal components. The connectors are used in the trains’ automatic couplings, which are subjected to the harshest environmental con- ditions. They must stand up to vibrations, wear debris from the brakes, dirt and moisture.


ODU, the connector specialist from Mühldorf, Germany, has developed a category 5 connec- tor for transferring data rates under diffi cult environmental conditions. The data connector is equipped with the proven ODU springwire contact technology and easily achieves far more than 50,000 mating cycles, while there is also a quick-change head model available for even more mating cycles. Transmission reliability in the face of vibrations and temper- ature fl uctuations is also ensured.


The connector solution transmits data rates of up to 100 Mbit/s. The company is already working on a connector version for Giga- bit Ethernet. EMC protection of


360° ensures that the data trans- mission is impervious to outside infl uences. Data connectors are made of light materials such as aluminium for the housing, which saves weight on even the smallest components. These connectors also comprise few components so that assembly is simple and quick. The connector can be as- sembled to common data rate cables in just a few steps. Certifi - cation by GHMT (test report no. P2211a-10-E) adds the fi nal touch to the new connector system for use under the harshest environ- mental conditions.


It is most notably used in the au- tomatic couplings of trains where it eliminates the need for a sepa- rate connection cable between cars. In addition to the patented ODU springwire contact, the powerful lamella contacts are also suitable for use in railroad tech- nology. The contact consists of a stamped lamella that is mounted in a lathed carrier.


The individual lamella ridges result in a multitude of contact points that guarantee a high level of contact stability. With a contact diameter of, for example, 4 mm, the ODU lamella contacts offer 18 contact points, and correspond- ingly more in larger diameters.

survey of Londoners has shown that the majority,


70%, wanted mobile broadband on the Underground, which has now been ruled out in the short term by Transport for London as too costly and complex – but most people still see air conditioned carriages as a higher priority.


It had been hoped that mobile ac- cess on the Tube could be in place in time for the 2012 Olympics.


Richard Patterson, director of Broadband Expert, which con- ducted the research, said: “Our results confi rmed that Londoners are indeed very keen to get con-


nected underground. But it also showed that they’d prefer to see resources spent on the more basic of needs – to feel comfortable and relaxed when travelling in tem- perature controlled carriages.


“Four underground lines with air conditioning installed are due to come into operation in 2013, but this is too late for the Games. Using the budget allocated for the mobile network to roll it out faster might help TfL take the heat out of its decision to ditch its ambitious communication plan. With summers feeling hotter, it’d be welcome news for Londoners and visitors alike.”
