anton switches are used for many varied applications such as Driver Direction, Master Control, Shunt Control, Battery Isolator and Porter’s Door Switch- es. Their robust design, technical capabili- ties and quality mean that Santon are still heavily relied on in today’s modern rail industry.
Developed using the most modern manufacturing processes and high specifi cation materials, the ‘Packet’ switch utilises clip and blade self-cleaning wiping action contacts, which are shock and vibration proof, perfectly suited for traction applications where reliable contact continuity is paramount.
The Santon range is from 16A to 1,000A, 660v AC and up to 1,000v DC, multi-pole and multi-position, handle or key oper- ated, manual, motor or solenoid operated, are amongst some of the applications pro- vided. They can be supplied enclosed or loose for OEMs.
The company has its headquarters at its manufacturing base in Rotterdam, Neth- erlands. It has offi ces in the UK, Germany, Spain, USA and many partners throughout Europe and across the world. The products are manufactured to the latest European and international standards.
In 2006, Santon Switchgear Ltd was asked to design and manufacture a Master Con- trol Switch, for the Central Line on the London Underground, to replace 190 unre- liable switches.
The previous design had become unreli- able and Santon was given the challenge of producing a switch which was virtually maintenance-free but designed to allow on-site fault fi nding and contact replace- ment if necessary, thus enabling the depot to remove the switch from the cab, fault fi nd, repair and re-fi t in a matter of a cou- ple of hours.
These Master Control Switches were fi tted as part of a modifi cation programme by Metronet Rail, which has contributed to a three-fold increase in reliability of the Cen- tral Line fl eet.

Another recent project was to overhaul 120 Driver Direction Switches on the Class 165 in partnership with Unipart Rail Ltd for First Great Western at Reading Depot. The original switches were approximately 20 years old and were increasingly becoming the main cause of failures in service. This project was completed successfully.
UK managing director Huw Wigmore said: “Santon has made a name for itself in the increasingly large replacement and refur- bishment switch business.
“Many types of switches have been used in the rail industry over the years by compa- nies who have gone out of business or by companies who have ceased manufacture of products they decide are no longer core products.
“Santon’s fl exibility and range of products has enabled it to provide these switching solutions.”
Santon also provide many products for new build, with Battery Isolator and shore supply switches amongst those supplied to some of the most recent trains such as the ‘Turbostar’, ‘Electrostar’ and West Coast Main Line Pendolino Tilting Trains; suc- cessful products using reliable Santon switches.
The R&D department at Santon’s headquarters in Holland has experienced, professional, highly trained engineers who can provide a solution to satisfy the customer’s requirements; no matter what the challenge.
