leading expertise in track product design, performance and, importantly, how to se- lect the optimum steel grade and rail sec- tion to improve the lifespan of the track system.

At Railtex, the company’s technical team is offering their expertise on how to make the most effi cient choice of rail for renew- als and on the factors that affect the most effective maintenance strategy, such as grinding and lubrication. Visitors can ei- ther book ahead or go to the stand at the show and discuss challenges on specifi c projects or come for a masterclass in track products and their performance.

Mike Poulter, technical director, com- mented: “Our technical team works with customers to understand the track specifi - cation and environment.

“Particularly where there are demanding conditions, like curves and level crossings or heavy traffi c conditions and high axle loads, that often result in faster degrada-

ata Steel has been manufacturing rails for over a century and has industry-

tion, we advise on the rail that will last longer and require less maintenance.”

Tata Steel is at the forefront of developing track systems and maintenance strategies that enhance rail life and reduce life cycle costs. At Railtex the company will showcase a range of rail products designed to excel in specifi c track conditions and reduce the need for maintenance.

Tata Steel has developed rail steels to com- bat the most dominant mechanisms of rail degradation of rolling contact fatigue and wear. Poulter explains: “High performance (HP) rail, for example, is designed for mixed traffi c railways, metros, and larger radii curves. By precisely controlling the steel microstructure HP rail achieves ten times greater resistance to wear and four times greater resistance to rolling contact fatigue compared to 260 rail.”

Railcote is another Tata Steel innovation. It is a high performance coating system that is easy to use and protects against corrosion in level crossings, wet tunnels, and coastal locations. Railcote is so effective that it ex- tends rail life by ten times when compared to 260 rail.

Tata Steel will be showing other steel prod- ucts tailored for the railway environment, for example modular platforms.

Designed so the majority of the installation work (including foundation construction) is done behind a safety fence and away from the operating railway so the railway does not need to close during the major- ity of the work. This results in obvious cost savings due to a lack of disruption to train service.

Poulter said: “We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to the Tata Steel stand at Railtex.

“The show is a great opportunity to see our customers and fi nd out more about the challenges they are facing so we can iden- tify opportunities to work together using our expertise and ex- tensive product range to develop solutions.”
