pecialist Engineering Services (SES) is a company providing bespoke so-
lutions in the rail, tunnelling, mining and civil engineering markets.
SES, with a group turnover in excess of £40,000,000 per annum, has a workforce of circa 700 people working in a wide range of roles from track workers to project man- agers, designers, electricians, S&T techni- cians and technical officers.
The company specialises in the supply of services in the track renewals and civil en- gineering markets, providing unique solu- tions, including communication systems that have proven cost reduction, enhanced safety and improved efficiency benefits to the end users.
SES provides a ‘one-stop-shop’ service for all rail related projects and associated civil engineering works.
This includes labour supply, training, tun- nelling, bridgeworks, OLE and project
management services. Our management promise is to ensure safety is paramount and to provide a value for money service to our delivery partners first time, every time.
We have a no nonsense approach and en- deavour to engage with our clients at a very early stage so that we have a clear under- standing of the needs of the client.
Unlike many of our competitors, we have unique, disciplined reporting lines through our team supervisors who are accountable for their team and accountable to the SES management team.
They are tasked with confirming the team’s fitness for work; they have the correct PPE before leaving the depot and are account- able for their team’s performance on site.
We supply highly experienced track renew- al supervisors and project managers who have worked on all types of renewals work from plain line to S&C renewal in standard weekend possessions and major blockades.
The rail division specialises in the provision of project management and completion of rail projects from conception to handback including all planning arrangements and associated paperwork. SES undertakes projects such as rail stressing for key rail- way contractors, managing the process through forms A – G, CRT management.
SES co-ordinates and completes core ac- tivities for clients taking on the installation of all track components in both plain line and S&C renewal, track drainage works installing up to 800 metres of 6’ or cess drainage in a typical weekend possession and projects such as track removal and re- instatement for ‘track off / on’ bridge pro- jects nationally.

he Oyster Extension to National Rail (OXNR) project has won the Excellence in Technology and Innovation prize at the London Transport Awards, marking the successful implementation of the complex scheme.
The award went jointly to Transport for London,
Cubic Transportation Systems and the Association of Train Operating Companies.
TfL invested £40m to install and upgrade equipment at every one of the 350 train stations in London to enable the wider roll- out of Oyster across the capital’s transport system.
Oyster pay-as-you-go was extended to every National Rail station in Greater London from January 2010 and more than two million Oyster journeys are now made each week on national rail services.
The joint award was presented to the three organisations at the ceremony on April 27.
Mike Tuckett, TfL’s head of National Rail Development, said: “Oyster pay-as-you-go on National Rail has been a huge success,
bringing London together by allowing passengers to use all public transport in the capital with one smartcard. We look forward to working with our partners to build on this success, and in particular to offer customers the opportunity to use contactless bankcards to pay as they go across London in 2012.”
Steve Shewmaker, president of Cubic Transportations Systems, said: “Each year, the London Transport Awards showcases the creativity, execution, achievement and overall excellence in transport development and innovation. We are honoured to join TfL and ATOC in receiving this award for
our joint success in providing Londoners with one integrated ticketing system.”
Steve Howes of ATOC said: “The rollout of Oyster pay-as-you-go to cover the whole of Greater London has made things quicker and simpler for the millions of people who use trains to get around the capital. It’s an honour to win the award, which is recognition for all the hard work that everyone put into making the project a success.”
