Finnish company Teknoware highlight the potential of LED interior lighting in the rail sector.
nterior lighting in public transport is one of the most important features to create a comfortable travelling experience. No matter how stunning the interior design you have, unsuitable, low-quality interior lighting can easily spoil the look. LED lighting is the future and has an incontestable advantage on account of its efficiency. Its smaller physical size provides opportunities and LEDs also set a new challenge by their intensity and colour management complexity.
I Long-term savings?
Although there are good, highly-efficient LEDs available, there are also low-quality LEDs which, as a result of their efficiency, lifetime and colour management possibili- ties are not good enough to be used for main lighting. With the low-quality LED lighting, only short-term savings could be achieved by possibly lower energy consumption; but after a few years, reliability and light output reduction problems occur, which increase the total life cycle costs.
The advantages, both economically and in efficiency, occur when LED lighting is con- sidered in the design phase. Today’s trend is to use existing light unit construction and only replace fluorescent tubes by LEDs. This can be justified in refurbishments and ener- gy savings can be gained, but weight or cost savings achievable by smaller light units cannot be obtained. Therefore, in the new designs, lighting should be integrated into the ceiling construction to minimise the size to gain all the advantages achievable.
The most accurate results can be achieved with a physical sample. Data recorded can be integrated into the virtual mock-up to achieve precise simulation results using Teknoware’s lighting laboratory, including its Ulbricht sphere and with a luminance camera.

Teknoware can evaluate complete lighting systems in virtual environments. Optimal layout of the luminaires and complicated designs can be evaluated without the need for a physical model.
A CAD-based luminance calculation program can be used to estimate, with an accuracy of a few percentage points, the luminance levels inside a bus or a train coach.
Jeremy Coonan, business development manager at SSDM, outlines how innovative promotional train wraps and graphics are getting the message across.
SDM, the largest supplier of graphics and self-adhesive film to the UK rail industry, provides major operators such as First Capital Connect (FCC), First TransPennine Express and East Coast Main Line with day-to-day corporate branding and associated maintenance services for their rolling stock. The Suffolk- based company also supply short-term promotional train wraps, which are seeing increased use amongst more traditional outdoor advertising.

Working with the likes of Northern Rail,
Gatwick Express and Heathrow Express, SSDM are setting the standards for delivering high-quality, high-impact graphics that turn trains into giant moving billboards.
Promotional train wraps and graphics can and have been used in a number of ways. For example, Arriva Trains Wales used promotional graphics to communicate important timetable changes to passengers

Northern Rail meanwhile, have worked with local organisations, such as Welcome to Yorkshire and Keighley Town Centre Association to help promote what the towns and regions have to offer visitors and encourage people to use the train to get to them. Similarly, just before the New Year, SSDM wrapped a four-car unit with full coverage printed graphics – for FCC and CBS Outdoor on behalf of Switzerland Tourism – to promote Switzerland as a holiday destination.
At the other end of the scale, the audience
reach of the busy airport and city rail links makes the trains that run on them highly- prized media platforms, attracting large commercial brands such as Emirates and RBS to advertise on the carriages.
Using trains to communicate key messages to customers or generate additional revenues through selling media space to third-party advertisers is a growing trend and one that seems set to continue, especially with the Olympics just around the corner.
