This course will equip you with the design, development, implementation and management skills to effectively engage in the definition, provision and ongoing in-life management of these technologies. ICT graduates are much in demand by industry who put great value in technically qualified managers in their organisations.


Computer Systems Engineering theme BEng Computer Systems Engineering This is a broad course in the field of computer hardware, software and communication networks. It provides you with the maximum flexibility to choose from a range of topics, such as computer security, embedded systems and robotics, as well as developing the core skills and knowledge required by industry.


BEng Computers and Electronics This course combines the study of computers with electronics (particularly digital electronics). It shares many modules with the courses in the Computer Systems Engineering theme but also draws upon material from our electronics and telecommunications courses, but without requiring A-level Mathematics. You will study computer hardware and software, operating systems, logic design and embedded systems.


BSc Computers and Electronics BSc Computer Science* (four-year courses with accelerated route) These courses offer Year Zero entry only and are run by the International Academy. They provide you with an entry route to our three-year BSc and BEng courses if you cannot meet our normal entry requirements. You can take the accelerated route if you demonstrate high ability during your first two terms: you will then continue through the third term and during the summer of the first year to study material equivalent to the first year of our three-year courses. Success in a September examination then allows you to progress into the second year. For further information, see International Academy.


MSci Computer Science (four-year Integrated Masters) This course will provide you with a great breadth and depth of understanding in computer science and related disciplines such as software engineering and artificial intelligence. The course covers the theory together with extensive practical laboratory sessions and both group and individual project work. The first three years cover increasingly advanced material at undergraduate level, while the fourth year is based exclusively on masters level material including computational intelligence, brain-computer interfaces and robotics, much of it taught by leading international experts in their respective areas.

Career opportunities While students with degrees in computer science or computer engineering have the full range of employment opportunities that are open to graduates of any subject, there are also a large number of often well paid posts in the various IT industries. The Government


and industry are increasingly concerned that there will be a shortfall in the number of skilled personnel to meet the needs of the IT industries. Essex graduates in computer science have been very successful in finding employment as systems analysts, software engineers, programmers and systems engineers, while a number choose to go on to postgraduate study or research.


Essex graduates in computer engineering are equipped to work at a professional level in the field of computers and networks and this is where most of our graduates aspire to work. We have many graduates in senior positions in the computer communications industry, as well as many of our more recent graduates working in IT and computer companies and in the retail and services sectors, where computer expertise is in high demand, particularly expertise in developing and managing computer servers and communications networks.


All our courses also provide a sound training in the development of problem-solving skills and strategies, which are relevant to a wide range of careers outside the computer field, including management, accountancy and the law.
