Applying to Essex | www.essex.ac.uk

Will any courses require me to sit additional aptitude tests? We will not ask you to take any of the existing aptitude tests (eg LNAT, BMAT) as a pre-requisite for admission. We believe that the existing system for assessing applicants provides enough information to make informed decisions.

Does Essex accept the Extended Project? Yes. We see the Extended Project as positive evidence of motivation to explore a subject in greater depth, as well as an opportunity for further development of analytical, critical thinking and independent research skills. If your results fall short of the offer level by a small margin, for example one A-level grade, your Extended Project result will be taken into account by the academic admissions selector.

What else will be taken into account by Essex when making offers? The academic admissions selectors for each subject will take the following factors into account when deciding whether to make you an offer, as together they provide a good indication of your potential:

nGCSE performance, including possession of pre-requisites (eg GCSE Mathematics grade C for some courses) and at least five GCSE passes at grade C or above (or equivalent);

n AS-levels taken, including subject mix and declared results;

n A-level or equivalent qualifications, including subject mix, need for pre-requisites, and predicted grades;

n a good personal statement, expressing clear motivation to study the subject, and demonstrating academic skills such as critical thinking, analytical skills and problem-solving skills, as well as good communication skills;

n enrichment and extra-curricular activity, including work-experience, qualifications (eg Duke of Edinburgh, Young Enterprise), positions of responsibility held, evidence of non-academic achievements, and engagement in relevant cultural and social activities, which would be included in your personal statement;

Formal applications should be submitted through UCAS in the normal way.

Direct entry to the

second year Some of our schools, departments and centres are happy to consider applications for entry to the second year of study on the basis of qualifications you may have obtained elsewhere. Exemptions are not normally available for LLB law courses. We also operate within the structures of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Applications from European Union and

international students We welcome applications from candidates educated in other European countries and from elsewhere in the world. We are happy to make offers of admission based on the International or European Baccalaureate, or on other qualifications that are considered equivalent to our general entrance requirements. For information on the entry requirements from a specific qualification, please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

We expect you to be able to understand and express yourself in both written and spoken English. If English is not your first language, you will need to meet our English language requirements and your English language ability may be assessed at the start of the academic year in October. We may then decide on the basis of this assessment that you need to follow a free-of-charge language course in the first term.
