programmes We offer a wide range of programmes to help you improve your English before starting a course. All programmes are full-time and intensive.

Pre-sessional programmes Our pre-sessional programmes offer language proficiency pathways to University of Essex courses without the need to re-take IELTS. Our aim is to provide both general language improvement and thorough preparation in the academic language skills needed for successful study in the UK.

The length and type of programme you need will depend on your current level of English and the language proficiency requirements of your university course of study. Check the minimum English language requirement for your anticipated course of study and the table opposite will help you choose the right pre-sessional programme pathway. Preparatory English Programme Our Preparatory English Programme (PEP) provides English language preparation from initiate level through to Pre-sessional entry level. Each module of the programme provides language study for up to 40 weeks and caters for undergraduate- and postgraduate-level students. You will receive a customised study plan to suit your current level and study goals.

The programme runs throughout the year in five week blocks. You may join in October, November, January, February, April, May or July. There is no minimum language requirement and the programme can be taken before joining the pre-sessional programmes.

Being an international lawyer has always been my dream. Therefore, I worked very hard to meet my goal and I have been rewarded as one of the brightest students in Libya which gave me the opportunity to come to the UK to achieve my dream. I chose to study law at the University of Essex because it has an excellent academic reputation for this subject and its teaching.

Maha Tera, Bridging Year ’09, Surnam, Libya

Maha left Libya in 2009 to study on the Bridging Year programme before embarking on her undergraduate course in law.

During my first days at the University I was very excited to be embarking on my dream of studying the Bridging Year. However, I felt quite nervous trying to understand my lectures but the feeling gradually decreased with the help my tutors provided to me, whom my gratitude goes to.

In my Bridging Year, my compulsory modules were Legal Theory in Practice, Law, and Academic Skills, and my options were Linguistics, Sociology and Politics. All of my modules helped me to gain a great deal of information that prepared me well for my degree.

Regarding the social life, I feel very much at home. Being a member of the Libyan, Islamic and Law societies has really helped as there are always many activities to get involved with. It has also given me the opportunity to meet new friends and find out about their cultures. I did enjoy the Bridging Year and I am sure I will enjoy the remaining years.
