Postgraduate art and design students have their own dedicated base at The Minories. This town centre location offers studio, seminar and lecture space on the first floor, with a public art gallery, shop and bistro on the ground floor. The four postgraduate programmes offered at The Minories are innovative and unique, with a focus on the use of the arts in celebrating, enhancing, and improving cultural, commercial and business environments.


The University of Essex is responsible for validating Colchester Institute degree programmes.


Colchester Institute’s history is a long one, stretching back to 1885. The College has played an important role in the development of innovative higher education in this part of the UK. Its highly supportive and vocational environment complements and enhances the University’s offer, and provides the opportunity for local progression from further education through to postgraduate study.


Colchester Institute offers a range of study programmes from Foundation degrees and undergraduate Honours degrees, to postgraduate certificates, diplomas and Masters degrees. Programmes are up-to-date, challenging and represent best practice in each of the subject areas. They are developed in partnership with employers locally, nationally and internationally to ensure the courses match today’s industry standards and tomorrow’s needs. The College focuses on career-related education and training which accompanies the development of a more skilled workforce.

The newest building to grace Colchester Institute’s campus was completed in January 2009, and is home to three centres; Construction, Engineering, and Music and Performing Arts. The West Building is a multi-million pound facility


Colchester Institute offers extensive facilities including student services, learning support and an on-site nursery. There are few colleges that can offer students fine dining, the chance to have their hair done and nails pampered, browse the on-site gallery and see some fantastic music concerts all on one campus! Open access IT suites consist of over 1,000 workstations with internet access for student use and, in addition, the College offers a technical learning resources centre which includes a multi-camera recording studio and video editing suite. The library contains over 100,000 items including books, CDs, music scores and computer software. It also houses relevant online databases and web resources with content across the full range of courses.


Colchester Institute will be holding higher education open events, specifically for undergraduate and postgraduate information, on 12 October 2011 and 29 February 2012. Programme tutors will be on hand to give advice on courses and career opportunities. General open events will be held during November (dates to be confirmed). Tutors from all areas of the College, along with support staff, will be on-site to discuss all programmes, including further and higher education.
