my results? If your offer is conditional on examination results and you meet the conditions specified in the offer, we will of course confirm your place. If your results do not quite meet the conditions, we may still confirm your place, but this is subject to the discretion of the selector and the availability of places. Our decision is made within a few days and notified to you through UCAS. Please do not wait until the results are published before telling the University of any special factors affecting your examination performance which you wish us to take into account.

Bridging Year and Certificate of Higher

Nolita Werrett, fourth-year LLB Law and Philosophy student, Witham, Essex

Education Bridging Year Our one-year Bridging Year will be well suited to you if you have completed your school education outside the EU with good grades, but need further academic study, and possibly also English language tuition, before commencing your studies. Successful completion of an appropriate choice of Bridging Year guarantees entry to any of our degree courses.

Certificates of Higher Education Our three-term Certificate of Higher Education (HE) will be well suited to you if you are seeking entry into the second year of certain undergraduate courses offered at Essex. You will study subjects equivalent to those studied in year one of an Essex course in the subject area you have chosen. The course runs from October through to July. Class sizes on the course are kept small, enabling you to receive personalised attention and support with your studies.

How to apply for the Bridging Year and Certificate of Higher Education You should apply directly to our International Academy. For further information, and to download an application form, please visit: www.essex.ac.uk/internationalacademy or e-mail: iaapply@essex.ac.uk. Ideally, your application should reach us by the end of July, but there is no fixed deadline.

As a mature applicant having been out of the academic world for quite a while, I undertook an Access to

Higher Education Certificate and attended a summer school, run by the University, to give me a taste of what student life might be like. This was a real eye-opener as I met so many people in the same situation as me, which was very reassuring. I had a million excuses for why it would be easier to give up before I had even started but none of them were good reasons; I decided that I needed to just go for it!

My main fear was coping financially (especially after leaving a well-paid profession) but tightening my purse strings a little means that I now get to experience the priceless rewards of higher education.

Making your UCAS

application can be daunting and challenging at times but it’s certainly all worth it in the

end. Writing your personal statement is the part which requires the most time and thought. It felt a bit weird writing purely about myself but I spoke to my teachers and admissions staff at the University who guided me well. My family were also a huge help as they were able to tell me things about myself that I wouldn’t necessary have thought to include.

Although my application took a lot of hard work and effort, I actually really enjoyed the process of writing it. You get a great sense of achievement once it’s done and you can start to look forward to the opportunities ahead.
