Rebecca Sanders, third-year BSc Nursing (Adult) student, Southend, Essex

People say studying nursing changes you and it’s true, and certainly for the better. Some of us have to juggle childcare, home life and learning, and whilst it is challenging I couldn’t be happier. I chose to study at the Southend Campus as the facilities are great. The content is perfectly structured for me and the lecturers are lovely and supportive. You also get lots of hands on experience on your varied placements. You meet amazing people (fellow students, staff and patients) with interesting life stories to tell; some that make you laugh and others that make you cry. No day is the same and I’m constantly learning new things without even realising.

The atmosphere and learning environment here is definitely something to be proud of. There’s so much encouragement which really helps with an intensive programme like this. One of the bonuses of going into nursing is there’s such a wide field of careers to experience and explore after you qualify, which for me ensures I’d never be bored.

I chose to study oral health sciences at the University of Essex because of its state-of-the-art facilities and the link that the University has with Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London. When I looked around at the open day, I really liked the Southend Campus and the attitude of the staff was brilliant. Since I came to the Southend Campus, I have not been disappointed.

Sarah Cheeseman, second-year FdSc Oral Health Sciences student, Colchester, Essex

I am really enjoying my studies and settling into university life has been easy. The programme is extremely interesting and there are many diverse modules to study, from Clinical Governance and Patient Safety to Management of Oral Diseases, which keeps the work fresh and varied. All of the modules will enable me to become a dental hygienist, as well as preparing me to be successful in whatever direction my career takes in the future.

I have also found the staff to be incredibly supportive. The lecturers are very knowledgeable and friendly, and the

Being in the centre of town gives the University even more personality and shopping is unavoidable, especially when you show off your student card to get a discount! On placement it’s a different experience – the first day is scary as you don’t know anyone and you’re nervous as to whether you’re going to like it. However, after a few hours you’re settled in and have found your place like you’ve worked there all along. By the end of some placements I’ve not wanted to leave, with tears and hugs as you say goodbye with your skills book in tow, one step further towards your nursing qualification.

I can’t express enough how rewarding my time is here at the University as a nursing student and what a privileged and unique experience it is with such expertise and support from all lecturers and staff. For now I’m going to enjoy every minute and embrace the support and resources around me. I love being a student nurse and if you think nursing is your pathway, then you will too.

facilities are excellent. The placements have been a huge learning curve and a great way to put into practice what we have been learning in the classroom. The clinical educators are also there to give guidance and support you through the placements, which has been hugely beneficial for me.

Apart from my academic study, I really enjoy being a student at Southend. All the facilities are modern and purpose-built. The beach and the high street are on the doorstep and there are brilliant social spaces for us to socialise between lectures. I commute as I live locally, but there is a great sense of community on campus. I have met many new friends since starting my studies and have had some brilliant nights out, thanks to the great entertainment programme provided by the Students’ Union.

All in all I have had an amazing first term and have learnt a lot. I would definitely recommend the programme to anyone interested in this area of health sciences!
