Upon graduating, Sarah began working for the Environment Agency and she now runs the marine programme for Essex Wildlife Trust.

I decided to study at Essex because of its reputation as one of the best institutions for marine biology in the UK. The

course combined the taught and practical elements of the subject very well; this broadened my understanding and really gave me a competitive edge when entering the world of employment.

Sarah Allison, BSc Marine and Freshwater Biology ’05, Colchester, Essex

Graduate Profile

Our lecturers were all enthusiastic, knowledgeable and very much involved in cutting-edge research at the forefront of their field. One of my most vivid memories is the field course in tropical marine biology which took me to Honduras, South America. It was great to see a part of the world that most will never have the opportunity to visit. I was taught by experts in the field of species identification and I learnt how to scuba dive to advanced open water level.

One of the biggest assets of the Colchester Campus is the beautiful parkland it is set in. This, along with the bustle of the squares, including the bars, cafés, restaurants and research centres, allowed me a form of escape and peace when I needed it. It also gave me the opportunity to get involved with extra-curricular activities in the squares. The campus had such a vibrant feel, which was added to by the international community giving me the chance to meet people from all over the world.

I was fortunate to be offered a job at the Environment Agency immediately after my exams finished, allowing me to put my freshwater knowledge into action straight away. I now run the marine programme for Essex Wildlife Trust and the knowledge that I gained through studying at Essex has been key to me achieving this.

My time at Essex was a real experience – I achieved so much and it has left me with many happy memories.

After graduating, Aleksandra was immediately awarded a PhD studentship at Imperial College London.

I really wanted to study genetics at degree level and after exploring my options I discovered that the University of Essex was one of the best teaching and research institutions in the country, offering a specific course in genetics. Prior to my arrival I discussed the course and its modules with staff from the Department and they were all very informative and friendly.

Aleksandra Dabrowska, BSc Biological Sciences (Genetics) ’09, Lublin, Poland

The Colchester Campus had a great selection of shops, bars and cafés which met all the needs of the students. The community atmosphere made it really easy to settle in and the staff were always able to assist by offering advice or help.

I was very pleased with the quality of the Department. It was full of very intelligent and experienced people who really cared about their students. Of each of my

modules, I especially enjoyed the laboratory work that we undertook. It gave me a great opportunity to gain a lot of practical experience which significantly supplemented the theoretical knowledge gained from the lectures. The structure of my course was quite flexible and I was really pleased that I could focus on the areas which I found most interesting and important for my future career as a research scientist.

I can honestly say that my third-year modules and the level of detail covered in lectures at Essex have prepared me exceptionally well for postgraduate studies at Imperial.

I loved my time at Essex; I was doing what I really wanted to do, and at the same time I had the chance to meet new people who shared my passion and interests. I made friends from many different parts of world and I now have so many unforgettable memories.
