proceed into the second year. The examinations at the end of the second and third years (and the fourth year in the case of four-year courses) count towards the final degree classification.

Career opportunities If you wish to pursue a career in law, all six of our LLB courses provide exemption from the academic stage of training for the legal profession, which means you can proceed to the Bar Professional Training Course or the Legal Practice Course, offered by a range of institutions across the country. We have close, well-established links with the legal profession.

Our graduates have secured positions across the spectrum of the legal profession: from multi-national city firms, through large national and regional firms, to local high street solicitors. Some of our other graduates have gone on to train for the Bar. Equally, there are opportunities for you to pursue a legal career in companies who have their own in-house legal teams or in the public sector.

While many of our graduates do pursue a career in the law, there are some who choose to take the desirable key skills developed whilst studying law into different sectors. These sectors are

wide ranging and include: business and commerce, accountancy, insurance, banking, central and local government, teaching, social work or the police force.

We offer careers advice and support, alongside the University’s Careers Centre, for our students and graduates. For example, we hold the annual Law Fair, attended by a wide variety of solicitors’ firms and barristers’ chambers, as well as vocational qualification providers. Additionally, careers talks are given on various topics including effective applications and life in the profession.

Andy Gould, Senior Trainee Resources Officer, Nabarro LLP “We are extremely proud of our strong relationship with the School of Law and the Careers Centre at Essex, which has been developed through regular well-attended presentations and associated initiatives. This has resulted in the recruitment of a number of high quality graduates from the University and we hope to maintain these links in the years to come.”

Danielle Harker, Human Resources Assistant, Ince & Co “We are delighted to continue developing our relationship with the University of Essex. We have recruited a number of

trainees over the past couple of years who are an asset to the firm. We look forward to continuing our annual talk, on life as a trainee, every January.”

Shirley Tarbin, Director of Personnel, Birkett Long “Birkett Long LLP has had a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Essex. We attend the Law Fair and other similar events, provide assistance to the Essex Law Clinic, have offered work experience placements and have recruited graduates.”

Sarah Nickle, Graduate Recruitment Officer, Allen & Overy LLP “The high quality courses offered by the School of Law provide graduates with opportunities to develop a wide range of skills, all of which are transferable into a legal career. We recognise that there are many bright and motivated students at the School and, each year, offer two places on our work experience week scheme to eager students.”
