particular, it looks at the issues that face this area – and understands why it is often characterised as a lost continent, plagued by economic and political crises. In spite of this assessment, there has been variation in performance across the continent and across time. The module will attempt to uncover why this is the case.

Introduction to European Politics will familiarise you with the development of modern European nation states from the French Revolution to the present day.

Political Analysis examines the ways in which students of politics analyse and present evidence using the latest in information technology. The module covers the basic principles of research design and will introduce you to quantitative analytical techniques.

Introduction to Political Theory will introduce you to political theory through the study of certain masterworks of the past. It covers the historical period from Machiavelli to Marx, from the rise of the

modern state to that of industrial capitalism, two institutions that still dominate our world. It deals with various, often competing, principles and arguments relating to certain fundamental problems arising from the relations among individuals, societies and governments in the context of modern political, social and economic institutions.

How will I be assessed? Assessment to establish continuation into the second year takes place at the end of the first year. Assessment normally takes place in the second and final years and is based on both coursework and examination. In certain cases, a third-year project can be substituted for a module. As the courses are intended to transmit skills as well as knowledge, an appropriate language module can be substituted for an optional module.

What can I go on to do

with a degree in politics? All Essex politics graduates have the distinction of a qualification from one of the world’s leading institutions. In turn, some of those graduates have distinguished themselves in a variety of ways and have gone on to careers in politics, management, journalism, Civil Service, police, armed forces, commerce, business, finance, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), teaching and graduate research. Our notable alumni include the former President of Costa Rica and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr Oscar Arias, and the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow MP.

In addition to these various career paths, we offer a wide range of specialised taught MA courses, MPhil degrees and Doctoral Programmes in the main areas of the discipline, as well as in interdisciplinary areas.
