Intergrated Masters Marine Biology This four-year Integrated Masters enables you to achieve a postgraduate level qualification. It provides an ideal basis for careers where research skills and independent project management are required; including progression to a PhD.


Can I study abroad? We offer study abroad versions of all our three-year courses. These courses enable you to broaden your understanding of the subject by studying at a partner institution in the EU (providing you have the relevant modern language qualification) or in the rest of the world (providing you have taken the relevant options in your first and second year), as the third year of a four-year course. A year abroad enables you to study a selection of new topics and is an excellent way to enhance your employment prospects.


Fieldwork and


Research on coral bleaching and the impacts of ocean acidification is conducted in our new, state-of-the-art coral aquarium facility, where different coral species can be grown under a wide range of controlled conditions


practicals. You will study the ecology of populations and communities, evolution and conservation.


The course combines a strong basis in ecology with a clear vocational orientation to integrate conservation skills with ecological theory. It is run in partnership with local conservation organisations, in particular Essex Wildlife Trust and Colchester Zoo. Individual research projects are of a wide and varied nature, but may focus on the effects of enclosure re-design, on orang-utan behaviour, coastal habitat management or plant biodiversity.

BSc Marine and Freshwater Biology This course will give you a detailed understanding of marine and freshwater biodiversity and ecology, the nature of threats to aquatic systems and how they can be managed. You will cover applied marine and freshwater survey and practical skills ranging from species identification to diving-based research skills.


On second- and third-year marine and coastal field courses, you will investigate marine biodiversity, develop skills in survey techniques and participate in the optional subsidised tropical field course. Specialised modules cover aquatic mammals and fish biology, marine biodiversity, freshwater ecology, tropical marine ecology, conservation, water pollution, coastal ecology, and evolution and behaviour. Your individual research project allows you to develop your interests; previous topics have included shellfisheries and water quality, turtle


laboratory practicals There is a strong emphasis on practical work, both in the field and laboratory depending on your course. Our teaching laboratory is a first-class facility with a dedicated team preparing the materials and equipment needed for each practical.


The practical skills you will learn in the teaching laboratory include microscopy, enzyme assays, DNA gels and bacteriology, as you use specialised scientific equipment to investigate the properties of living organisms, cells and molecules. Fieldwork can include surveying small mammal populations in the extensive campus grounds, observing animal behaviour at Colchester Zoo, or studying estuarine and coastal habitats or ancient forests in this part of Essex.


You will take part in marine biology and ecology field courses to gain experience of surveying and identifying marine and land animals and plants, to develop the field skills essential for these specialised courses. Currently these subsidised residential courses are held at Millport in Scotland and in Brittany, France. You will also have an exciting opportunity to travel to Indonesia for a residential tropical field
