After graduating, Jenna started work at Synergy Healthcare Research, a leading market research agency in the healthcare sector.

I chose Essex because I lived locally and knew that it had an excellent reputation for being modern and forward thinking, and was well respected by employers. The Department of Sociology was rated as outstanding for the quality of its research so I knew that I couldn’t study anywhere better.

Jenna Richardson, BA Sociology (Social Sciences) ’07, Colchester, Essex

I found settling in to university life easy because everyone was so friendly; both students and staff. There was a relaxed atmosphere with lots going on to get involved with – sports, arts, music and good nights out! The Colchester Campus had a good community feel to it.

The lecturer I had for sociological research techniques made it fun and interesting every week, giving us real-life examples and ideas of how we could put what we had learnt into practice. The globalisation

After graduating, Andrew spent some time travelling in the Far East, before starting MA Longitudinal Social Research at Essex.

Prior to attending the University, I visited friends already studying here and enjoyed the happy atmosphere of the campus and

its surrounding area. I also really liked how friendly the place was and the sense of community on campus. As soon as I moved in, I realised that there was never anything to have worried about. I made instant friends from my flat and course, and there was lots of support from my flatmates, classmates, tutors and other staff at the University. The support really was second to none. Furthermore, there were plenty of events and activities spread out into and beyond fresher’s week, quickly distracting me from any homesick blues.

There are so many different clubs and societies to get involved with; I was a very keen member of the Poker Society! There

module was excellent because it dealt with current issues which I could relate to and I had a great tutor. The sociological research techniques which I acquired are now proving particularly useful in my current role. My third-year research project has also been very relevant as it is closely linked to the kind of work I do now, although on a smaller scale. I also feel that I picked up many skills from my studies such as the ability to communicate and to think creatively about the world and society.

The lecturers were brilliant because there was always someone to go to who was a specialist in a particular field. The Department was fantastically organised and there were always new and exciting modules to choose from every year.

My fondest memory of Essex was the day of my graduation, which was one of the proudest days of my life. I will never forget my time at Essex as it has given me the skills and confidence to do anything I want in the future.

was so much variety on offer that I truly believe there is something for everyone.

The Department of Sociology is full of published researchers and writers. I was taught by some of the most competent and well-versed teachers I have ever encountered. I thoroughly enjoyed the Social Psychology module as well as Sociology of Sexualities. These, amongst other theory modules, really challenged me to think about familiar things and situations in completely novel ways.

My undergraduate degree has prepared me well for postgraduate study and I have found the transition very smooth. I had a lot of fun, made many friends, studied hard and gained some great rewards. I have learnt so much about myself, those around me and what I want to do with my life. I would not change anything about my time here at Essex.
