Applying to Essex | www.essex.ac.uk

If you are a UK student and still at school or college, you can apply through your school. Your careers advisor or teacher will be able to check and then submit your completed application to UCAS. If you are an EU or international student, it may be possible to apply through your school or college, but this is not common practice. If your school or college does not offer this facility, or you no longer attend school or college, you can apply online through UCAS Apply, as an independent applicant.

If you need help or advice on your individual application, you should contact the UCAS Customer Service Unit by telephoning: +44 (0) 871 468 0468.

The UCAS code for Essex is ESSEX E70. The individual campus codes for our Loughton and Southend campuses are ‘L’ and ‘S’ respectively.

When should I apply? Entry in October 2012 If you are applying from the UK or any other EU country for entry in October 2012, you should send your application to UCAS as soon as possible after 1 September 2011 and not later than 15 January 2012. If your application is received by UCAS after this date it will be forwarded to the universities you have listed and can be considered at the universities’ discretion. We normally continue to consider applications after this date, subject to the availability of places on the relevant course. If you live outside the European Union, you should aim to send you application to UCAS no later than 30 June 2012.

Deferred entry Taking a gap year may enhance your application. A year abroad can add valuable cultural and linguistic experience. If you decide to use your gap year to work and earn some money to support your higher education study, this would certainly be viewed as using your time wisely. If you intend to defer entry to the University for a year, you can apply in the normal way during 2011-12, but indicate clearly on your UCAS application that you wish to enter in 2013. You may wish to provide details of how you intend to spend the intervening year. Applications for deferred entry will be considered on the same basis as those for entry in October 2012.

UCAS Extra We may be prepared to consider an application through UCAS Extra, subject to the availability of places. Please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office, prior to making a UCAS Extra application, to ensure there will be no difficulties. We would also advise you to submit a new personal statement and reference directly to us, particularly if the subject emphasis of your course has altered since making your initial application.

How is my application

dealt with? When your application arrives from UCAS, it will be considered by the relevant academic selector(s). If you are based in the UK at the time of application, you may be invited to attend an interview before receiving an offer; this depends on the admissions policy of the individual school, department or centre. Alternatively, you may be offered a place without interview. In this case, we will invite you to come to the University for an organised visit day.

Visit days take place on Wednesday afternoons from November to April and are intended to give you a chance to meet members of staff and students, ask questions and have a look around the University. If you live outside the UK, we would not normally invite you to visit because of the length and cost of the

journey involved, but if you would like to come, we will warmly welcome you. To request an invitation, please e-mail: visit@essex.ac.uk.

If you apply for a course at East 15 Acting School, in addition to applying through UCAS, you must also apply direct to East 15. You will be required to attend an audition, interview or technical theatre assessment, for almost all courses. For further information, please visit: www.east15.ac.uk.

How do I find out if I

have been offered a place? UCAS will send you official notification of our decision and we will also inform you of the decision. If your application is unsuccessful and you would like feedback, please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office by e-mailing: admit@essex.ac.uk.

How do I accept a place? UCAS will give you the option to accept one offer as your firm (first) choice and one offer as your insurance (second) choice. You do not need to contact us directly with your decision – we will be told this by UCAS – but if you have any queries before you make your final decision, please contact us.
