Why study literature

at Essex? Literature at Essex offers a wide range of courses. Among the most popular, BA English Literature offers the special study of literary texts. We also offer you the opportunity to relate the printed word on the page to the visual image on the

screen (BA Film Studies and Literature), as well as to performance on the stage (BA Drama and Literature). BA Creative Writing provides the opportunity to develop your own skills as a writer complementing the study of literary texts.

Our courses in film studies, drama, and creative writing, introduced in response to a call from the current generation of students for increasing diversity, conform to our central aim of helping undergraduates grasp the dynamics of cultural change in the present as well as in the past. This objective is reflected in our focus on such topical issues as early modernity, modernity, and postmodernity in our classes, in our insistence upon the lasting value of acquiring study skills while attending university, but also in the way in which we repeatedly and purposefully set the contemporary alongside the traditional and the classical. Our interest is as much in context as it is in text. This is true both of the courses already mentioned and of our many other courses, including two

which offer the possibility of a year abroad and several taught in conjunction with other departments.

We are a research active department, climbing ten places in the UK rankings with 95 per cent of our research rated as of internationally recognised quality in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008).
