After graduating, Ashton completed his Legal Practice Course at BPP Law School in London and is now a paralegal for Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP.

I chose to study at Essex mainly because of its highly regarded School of Law. I had also spoken to friends and family about the University and they had nothing but excellent things to say. I then visited the Colchester Campus; I loved the setting it was in, and everyone was really friendly.

I adapted to university life very quickly. The School made it very clear what was expected of me and I was extremely focused from day one. The work was different from that at college; it was much more in depth which made it far more interesting and challenging.

All of the staff within the School were welcoming and never too busy to help. Throughout my course I relished the

modules on company law and the law of the European Union. I found them fascinating, and continued to study these during my Legal Practice Course. These have essentially shaped my future, as they are the areas of law that I am currently practising.

Alongside my studies I played for the football team. This was a great way to meet friends and integrate myself outside of my course. Initially, I was worried about settling in as I was commuting to the University from home, but I shouldn’t have worried at all.

I had a fantastic time at Essex and my fondest memory is definitely my graduation day. Celebrating my achievements with all my friends and family was a day that I will never forget.

Directly after completing his course, Sam joined an investment bank. After qualifying as an accountant, he decided to return to law and acquired a training contract with the international firm K&L Gates.

I chose the University of Essex for many reasons. I wanted to stay in the south-east of England, but wanted to leave

London for my studies. Therefore Essex was the ideal place. I also thought that the University placed a large emphasis on the excellent communication between the academic staff and the students, and this definitely proved to be the case.

I found the environment of the Colchester Campus amazing! The fact we had our lectures, our accommodation, and all our social facilities on one site helped create a brilliant student atmosphere. I felt part of the University from day one.

162 | Undergraduate Prospectus 2012

The School offered many optional modules appealing to various interests, ranging from international and employment law, to criminal and family law. Despite

being a large school, I was able to get to know many members of academic staff, which was incredibly helpful when I began to consider my next career steps.

During my time at Essex I really immersed myself into student life by taking part in all that the University had to offer. I became President of the Law Society and even organised the annual Law Ball. It helped me to get in contact with a large number of national and international law firms; one of which invited me to undertake a summer internship! Furthermore, I became elected to the executive of the National Union of Students (NUS), a role that enabled me to visit universities all over the country, as well as being an executive of the Students’ Union.

My favourite memory of life at Essex was the rich and diverse campus. There were so many opportunities to get involved and meet like-minded people who I am sure to know for the rest of my life.
